Bush Says He Will Veto Any Bill to Stop UAE Port Deal

WASHINGTON — In a rare display of his veto authority President Bush said Tuesday he will put the kibosh on any legislation that attempts to stop the purchase by a United Arab Emirates-owned firm of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports.

Breaking a gaping silence during the debate of the purchase by Dubai Ports World, Bush said the deal should go forward and won't jeopardize U.S. security.

Officials from the Cabinet departments that participate in the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, which approved the sale last Monday, are appearing in a briefing Tuesday afternoon to defend the process by which CFIUS reviewed and approved the deal.

Officials from the Treasury, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security will participate.

"Coming so soon after the Muslim riots over the cartoons, it's an understandable reaction. But, silly, nonetheless."

I agree that the cartoon reaction of Muslim rioting may be influencing the reaction of this Dubai deal, but nonetheless what it HAS done is reminded folks of the instability and distrust of these people and that they are capable of ANYTHING.

"What Pres. Bush needs to do, is give the public an explanation for why this deal is perfectly safe. That's what everyone wants to hear. Then the hoopla will be over."

"Perfectly safe"?? A Muslim company in charge of U.S. ports?

I'm afraid you're living in the Land of Oz if you think Dubya's pulling this off.

The damage is done.

I doubt any want to see their investment go up in smoke.

The other Islamic Swine don't seem to care. The Saudis wouldn't have any assets but sand if I were President. (And the others would be quaking in their boots.)

Not only will he pull it off, but all those acting like hyenas are going to look very foolish because they simply don't know what they're talking about.

>And since you're no more privy to any of this than the rest of us, what makes you think the picture is being set "right" rather than wrong?

I simply don't think anybody at that level of government could be that stupid, especially with the checks and balances that come with group feedback, witness Free Republic. I just try to look at things with a little bit of common sense.

So much for pyrrhic victories.

Don't expect this to help the GOP in 2008 if he does.

If republicans put it aside as they should, it won't be a factor.

Well, I doubt that any of us here would have supported BJ or Jimmeh, simply because we knew their track records. Bush's record has been good, and Dems have been bad, courting the Muzzies at every moment and undermining our troops whenever they can. So bear that in mind. There's nothing wrong with supporting certain administrations. Rational people have to make rational decisions based on what they know.

I think the Dems, probably like yourself, are trying to play both sides of the game. They are refraining from confronting Islam or Islamic terrorist states, on the one hand, but are trying to pick on a safe target - the basically commercially oriented UAE, which is only getting this deal because no American company even bid - and make themselves look like hot stuff with absolutely no risk to them.

> So basically, what you're saying is that you trust Bush's flunky political hacks and campaign donors. Carter did the same time, and gave away the Panama Canal. But he did that with our best interests at heart, of course. Did you have the same inclination to believe in Clinton’s hacks too? Or do you only support certain administration’s best and brightests?

Good point. Yes, I do support this administration. I would not call Rummy, Condie Rice, Dick Cheney to name just a few who are NOT, IMHO, "flunky political hacks and campaign donors".
I think these are honorable men and women who would raise objections if they thought a policy was not in the national interest, and the President would have listened to their council.

The thing is, Sink..I'd simply feel a lot better about this situation if some of those "hyenas" weren't named Frist and Welden..

But they are. It's no surprise to see Weldon go off half-cocked, but Frist ought to do his homework before he opens his mouth.

He's playing politics with this, and it's pathetic.

This proves my point that you can find a citation for ANYTHING on the web.

I hold my position: China does NOT own the Panama Canal.

The GOP is split; Hastart AND Frist are against it, as are various pundits. It's already a PR disaster.

It's going to be an ace issue come 2008 for the Dems.
