US director Steven Spielberg discusses his controversial new film "Munich," which deals with the aftermath of the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics. In an interview with DER SPIEGEL he talks about the moral aspects of dealing with terrorism and responds to critics who claim he's betrayed the Jewish people.
SPIEGEL: Mr. Spielberg, can you remember the hours of the Olympic massacre? Do you know where you were when you heard the terrible news?
Spielberg: Yes, I do. I was watching a "Wide World of Sports" live broadcast from Munich when the news suddenly flashed in, and the well-known sports commentator Jim McKay became a man for the hard facts of world politics. I was glued to the TV for the next few hours. I think it was then that I heard the words "terrorist" and "terrorism" for the first time - they hadn't been part of my vocabulary up to then.
SPIEGEL: Later, you were frequently approached with ideas for a "Munich" film. For a long time you couldn't warm to the material, and kept putting it off. Why?
Spielberg: I declined for several years because I didn't like the scripts and because I considered it too complex a problem. I discussed this film with all kinds of people who mean a lot to me, in the hope that they would talk me out of it, even my parents and my rabbi. But no-one would do me that favor. So my scriptwriter Tony Kushner and myself took on the project as seriously and politically unbiased, and as uncompromisingly as possible.
SPIEGEL: And do you regret it?
Spielberg: Not at all. I am now extremely happy that I had the courage to make "Munich".

If anyone is in touch with Spielburg, remind him there are a number of programs which will allow him to serve in a support capacity for the IDF, or other Israeli institutions, for periods as short as two weeks.
I don't know why everyone is jumping on him. My ex husband was German with a last name with only 2 letters added to Goring. When his dad was in the Army and stationed in Germany, he got spit on or yelled at by many different folks when they read his name. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. Just because he got crap from people who looked like him, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Heck, he doesn't even practice what he believes, let alone "die for Israel". This is just another confused liberal looking for a grandiose pat on the back.
I know German Americans get discriminated against. Or Germans themselves. I actually had an Aupair from Germany and she told me that one time, in the US she was introduced to a Jewish woman and her son. When the woman found out my aupair was German, she was blatently rude to her. And it hurt my Aupairs feelings it really did.
We should all be boycotting Hollywood in general, but if we are helplessly addicted to the movies, then we should at least boycott this film.

Nothing wrong with being Ashkenazi (I'm one myself). It's the liberal Ashkenazis that I have a problem with. The Orthodox and Hasidic Jews vote Republican, they're also Ashkenazi. Liberal Ashkenazis wring their hands over the rate of Jewish intermarriage. Meanwhile, the Orthodox and Hasidim never intermarry and have lots of kids. They, along with the Sephardim are the future of Judaism.
The Rob Reiners and Billy Crystals of the world will not have Jewish great grandchildren, as their religion is not Judaism, it's liberal secularism. Why should their kids and grandkids feel any need to preserve their heritage, if they think being Jewish means nothing more than eating bagels and lox and telling jokes that contain the occasional Yiddish expression?
The hypocrisy of liberal Ashkenazi Jews is that they'll go to synagogue and basically tune out the rabbi when he speaks about biblical prophecies, the coming of the Messiah, etc. Then, when Christian fundamentalists talk about these same ideas, all of the sudden, they pay attention and they're frightened and outraged. In other words, it's okay for a rabbi to talk about that stuff in a synagogue, as long as no one is really listening and no one takes it seriously.
