Yep! He even lectured Kennedy & Co. on their behavior during the hearings. He said his constituents are overwhelmingly for Alito.

If one of those 10 Democrats jumps the fence to vote for cloture, we cannot sustain a filibuster.

There is no way in hell Lautenberg is going to vote against Alito. No way.

Well, well; we may be seeing the beginnings of a complete exposure of the "suicidal Democrats" versus the "old time Democrats."

Uh oh, save. I think I may be on the wrong side of this one...as seems to be the concensus on this board :) I don't mind losing this one.

The biggest turning point and most exciting part of the day was Sen. Byrd's speech. Not only was it one of the best and 'fair' speeches so far (he critisized the dems for their harshness and character assasination, and he chastised the republicans for not asking tough questions during the commitee hearings) but it looked like he caught the Dem leadership off guard. Reid came out after and looked like he was crying in the backroom and wouldn't give Spector a straight answer.

Do you think Bryrd still writes his own speeches?

Why is Snowe not speaking tonight...anyone read anything into that?

The biggest excitement was when Byrd announced his support for Alito. I realize that Byrd and excitement aren't synonymous, but the excitement came when the DUmmies threw a tantrum over it. Byrd's announcement also drove a stake through the heart of the already dead Alito opposition.

I would have loved to have seen the tantrums and heard the remarks. Care to share any details?

He sponsored him!

I know, but he said at the end of his introduction that he was not recommending his confirmation.

I saw the one there called Future Law School Grad and that reminded me -- did you catch O'Reilly last night and what happened last week with our AG went to Georgetown to speak and participate in a question/answer forum -- and half the room stood up and turned their backs on him and a bunch of them held up a nasty sign?

Yeah! They turned on him immediately and began ranting about his former KKK ties, his senility, etc. I assume the threads are still there. Take a look at DUmmy Underground if you can stand it. :-)

Hmm, I'm not sure everything is settled and in place. I understand that Frist tried to get UC to place a time specific for a vote, and Reid objected. Then Frist filed a cloture motion, signed by 17 senators, that will be voted on Monday afternoon. I believe that you have to wait 1 day after cloture is filed to hold the vote. Frist did this because he's heard the rumors of a possible Democratic fillibuster. Then, FRist said, and Reid apparently agreed, that once the cloture motion passed, then they have scheduled the vote on the nomination for 11am on Tuesday. That's where I understand we are right now.

Now, here's my question: Doesn't the cloture motion, after it's passed, require 100 additional hours of debate and then a vote? I think the amount of debate time can be changed at any time, but I assume that means via UC. I'm 100% sure that if the cloture motion passes, they Demos will DEMAND the full 100 hours of debate prior to voting, and there aren't enough hours in the day to do that prior to the SOTU address, so the Demos will at least have achieved that.
