Canadian General Election, Live Thread (UPDATE: Conservatives Win!)
Elections Canada ^ | N/A

Posted on 01/23/2006 8:03:44 AM PST by GreenLanternCorps

If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

If we were only going to pick up a couple in the Atlantic anyway, couldn't these limited results even suggest that the Tories *could* make up those gains in Quebec and stay on track for a decent minority anyway?

I agree with your earlier assessment, just getting midly close in this riding is a major accomplishment and may portend well for Quebec ridings outside Montreal.

I'd be happy with even a narrow loss there, since that was totally unexpected in the Gaspe.

That would be icing on the cake...

Yep. The Liberals are dead as a doornail in Quebec. The Conservatives have supplanted them as THE federalist alternative.

Agreed. It's back to the Bloc now, but right now, I'm happy there...since it was NOT expected.

It's 155 for a majority, because our House of Parliament has 309 seats.

So if no party gets over that number, then the party with the largest number forms a minority government - though its leader still becomes the Prime Minister - with some kind of co-op deal with another party to get the 155 "working majority" needed to pass legislation.

Avalon and Tobique-Mactacquac.

Saint John and Fredericton are shown as narrow Liberal leads.

Not to sound like a noodnig, but would you please give the definition of CPC and PCP? I think I know, but I'd rather hear it from someone who does know.
