We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

Wow....Metallurgical engineer,...way to go!

I was a CNC Underwater gantry Plasma operator,....allong with cutting big steel and alloy,
had to do ultrasound and other inspection metallurgy wise for Consortiums.
Crunching numbers on plate from around the world....phone calls to U.S. to see if engineers would accept % differences in matrix of plate chem.
worked around Nuclear x ray....was also a shift rescue first aid.
Light Speed knows major blood flow : )

BP and Chevron really screwed up on a 3 year North Slope Alaska project....[Badami]
We kept getting work from Chevron after....but BP vanished off the radar.
I think there was a falling out after Badami.

Some of my shifts started with....
"We just got this Inconel alloy plate in......its worth $20,000....you have 3/8's margin for mistake....don't screw up"
plasma cut takes an 1/8th....not much room left....lots of nail biting and prayer : )

If Canada's Arctic keeps warming as trends indicate.....in a decade....shipping container traffic might have 4-5 months transit time.
rumors that Canada may have loading terminals up north with connector container rail link to U.S.
Canada's arctic also has mugu resorces which Chi Coms have seen allready and are pining to have in at.
I think U.S. Corporate interst and world corporate synergy would like a Conservative Gov in place for that over Liberal.
I beleive the U.S. will help the Conservatives allong thru the oil/gas[current]....and into the future Arctic business play.

Looking at the reactions of Canadians here and on Free Dominion to this election, I rather think you got your expections too high in the past several weeks, thinking that the Conservatives would be swept to a grand, insurmountable majority, etc. etc. But that was all based on polls (we should all be very wary of polls) and voters tend to get more and more cautious about voting for sweeping change as the election nears; as you might remember, the exact same thing happened in Germany, where Merkel was riding a massive tidal wave throughout the campaign and yet barely managed to scrap her win together in the end.

Since the anticipated Conservative majority didn't happen you're letdown. But despite what disheartened Canadian conservatives, as well relieved Canadian liberals, are saying, this is still a major victory. It is a victory simply to get those crooks out of power and now the Conservatives will have a chance to govern. Hopefully they will to it well and convince the citizenry to vote them even more seats next time. Yes, it is a long, hard slog. It has always been. Here in the United States our "conservative revolution" hasn't been any less difficult. In took 20+ years of the nascent conservative movement to grow strong enough give us President Reagan and reconfigure the political spectrum enough to make such a conservative ascendency possible. It took another 6 years after Reagan to win the House and by then triangulating Clinton had slipped in. It then took another 6 years to get the Democrats out the White House (by the skin of our teeth and losing the popular vote), another 2 years to win the Senate, and we still had a pretty close presidential campaign in 2004. And we STILL have to deal with ALL SORTS of democrat whining and obstructionism and republican wishy-washyness; it's still an endless brutal fight. And American conservatives, from what I've seen, tend to be quite optomistic about the way things are going. Canadian conservative should be too, in the face of this election, even though the battle is not even close to over: it has only just begun.

Yes....that kinda goes under the radar when world oil prices are margined in the news.

Alot of Natural Gas too.

We also cooperate with U.S. Federal law.
We lost several contracts which were blocked by Congress to Venezuela.
The U.S. arranged for the U.S. Consortiums fabricating up here in Calgary....with alternative projects in places like Saudi Arabia,Kuwait etc.
There were no layoffs....just a slow down...and then 2 yrs more work.
U.S. oil patch and Gov have shown regard for whats gets made for them here in Alberta.
It has been a great working relationship : )

The devolution of federal powers to the provinces will take Harper into a constitutional swamp.

Martin promised to remove the not withstanding clause. If Harper allows the NWC to be used willy nilly he will lose his power as a national leader.

Suddenly every mouth breathing provincial party will be able to thumb their noses at parliament. Do you want some hick provincial party dictating foreign policy?

Amazing technology huh....but kinda scarry too,
My Plasma had banks of cryo nitrogen which was like 3 ft away.
They let go....and I fall to the ground and shatter like glass.

I'll take a burn from welding over a lance rod thru 8" steel.
blow back slag is unforgiving : )

Had a Pigeon land in the gantry tank and swim around while cut was occuring.
Must have been a Bronx Pigeon : )

Yeah my FIL was a merchant mariner during WWII and worked on a deep sea tug before he got his welder's ticket.

Got knocked out of his bunk when the tug went aground and sunk like a rock.

He went to shore work after that.

The man knew about every alloy because he worked with the material.

Never went beyond high school. I learned to draw a decent bead from him. He sold me his 1948 Miller welder before he retired. The thing had more copper in it than most modern copper mines. It weighed a ton but could pump out 100 amp unit cycle welds all day long without stalling or overheating. I used 1/4" nickel rod on that thing and it asked for more and a free lunch afterwords.

Wow...Merchant Mariner duty was way dangerous...especially off U.S. East Coast 41-43.

U Boats would sink traffic right in ST Lawrence seaway...having passed U.S. navy Bases at Argentia Newfoundland allong with Canadian.

You could see the lights on the coast shore east coast....and still be in grave danger.

Speaking of welding,
Had an English fella in a fab shop who used to weld rigs in North Sea.
He said they would do overhead weld in shifts for a week straight....talk about arm and body position fatigue.

poor fella was an alcoholic though...they fired him for being late several times.
even in his condition....you could see his weld skill.

When I was a member of a Street Rod club these two Welsh welders emigrated to Canada.

They made coal skittles in the old country.

Our boys taught them how to hammer weld sheet metal.

When they got the hang of it one of the members of our club, who was a mechanical engineere hired them to chop and channel his duece model A and lengthen the frame to fit a long block Ford engine.

They made everything from scratch, fenders hood with hinged side panels and cut two inches out of the body full length before they channelled it over the frame.

The fender aprons were made from 17 different pieces of steel with hand made patterns. The thing was a work of art.

If it can happen in Canada, I'm hoping the right can re-take the bay area, somehow. I pray.

No cons elected in Vancouver, and maybe 1 in Toronto. Best not get your hopes up based on this election. Sorry about that. (filter by British Columbia. Not easy to do same for TO)
