Canadian General Election, Live Thread (UPDATE: Conservatives Win!)
Elections Canada ^ | N/A

Posted on 01/23/2006 8:03:44 AM PST by GreenLanternCorps

If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

Could someone rank these parties from right to left? liberal, bloc quebecois, ndp

NDP---Liberal---Conservative

Most Bloc members are more liberal than the Liberals - I'd put them in between the NDP and Liberals - but the party's main concern is Quebec separation.

CBC is doing damage control to say the vote was to "punish the liberals"

They are trying to undermine the legitimacy of the results by saying this is just temporary to punich the left. Thus implying just wait until the next election.

Why couldn't c-span get something other than canadian left wing propaganda?

there WILL be a leadership review. In fact as Preston Manning said earlier there are at least 3 former Liberal Cabinet Members from Chretien years that are drooling at the moment. Martin has a bullseye painted on his back. If he's smart, he'll resign.

That is ridiculous. It sounded to me like they were talking about some sort of constitutional crisis that doesn't exist. The Conservatives have a clear plurality of seats, and it is the Governor-General, not the PM, that forms a government

Not quite. The GG is only the head of state. One of the parties, usually the one with most of the seats will go to the GG to ask to form the government. However, there have been times in Canada where the Grits who had less than the Tories in seats formed a government with a coalition. You have to go back to 1925 federally.

Hopefully its a win for Conservatives with no undermining from NDP and Block PQ.

Canada has had some nasty post election intrigues in past.

Idiot on CBC: "If Harper won 2 years ago, we'd be at war right now."

That's not any ordinary idiot, she used to be in Courtney Love's band Hole.
