If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

Because the Bloc probably won't team up with anyone for any extended period of time. The NDP could team with the Liberals. But they are far short of a majority, even taken together.

These CBC liberal downers make our MSM look conservative.

The Liberals have done much better than the polls predicted.

IMO it will not be easy for Mr. Harper to govern with those numbers.

Minority governments can be messy and unpredictable.

One thing though is that Albertas future is going to dominate Canadas future and Alberta is full of cowboys!

YeeeHaw!

Congratulations to Canada and to Alberta!

The West is in!

The polls were wrong last time too. Or the last-minute Liberal scare-mongering worked too well...

The GTA was a Liberal sweep...but the Hamilton-Niagara area and Eastern Ontario dumped them.

why did the results in both germany and canada both fall short of expectations? do conservatives outside of the u.s. poll better than they run?

The conservatives didn't do well enough in Ontario it looks like. And what's up with the NDP in BC?

Ha Alberta 100% which means McLellan is gone and B.C. has contributed 75% of her seats. Thank God.

Using New Zealand's political spectrum as a reference,

Labour Party = major centre-left party in NZ
National Party = major centre-right party in NZ
ACT Party = conservative party in NZ
Progressive Coalition, Green Party, Alliance = left-wing parties in NZ
Destiny NZ and Christian Heritage Party = Christian conservative party
United Future Party =

US Democratic Party = in between Labour Party and National Party
US Republican Party = the most conservative of National Party plus ACT, and adding a bit of Destiny NZ to the mix

Liberal Party of Canada = NZ Labour Party
Conservative Party = NZ National Party
New Democratic Party of Canada = Progressive Coalition/Alliance/Green Party of NZ

Moore will always be cheered by last year's victory by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Even though when he last went to Iran, they thought he was a woman and made him wear a burka.

Not really. All the vote isn't in yet. The Ontario vote is only 2 or 3 points off the 4-poll average, for example.

Someone on this thread said that Peter reminded them of Dan Rather. His voice reminds me of Tom Brokaw and he's as full of himself as Brokaw and Jennings put together. The other putz was reminding me a bit of Bob Schieffer a little while ago when he was leaning back in his chair. If I had to watch them every night - I'd never watch news on T.V. - -Thanks goodness for Brit!

Was there a Gretzky running for the Conservatives? I thought I saw that name on the CBC sidebar briefly.

A majority is better than a minority, for sure. But I'll take a minority Conservative gov't over a Liberal ANYTHING anyday.

The key is to see how 'solid' his minority gov't will be

Wonderful. I think there are more Canadians than the CBC wanted us to know who are really Conservative. The radical Libs through the CBC have been hoodwinking the Canadian population into thinking they were outnumbered by LIBS. Not true. Here is Canada's chance to take back their country from the malcontented degnerates who also want to drag this country down.
