US Largest Poinsettia Farmers among Planned Parenthood's Biggest Donors

ENCINITAS, January 16, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Many pro-life organizations use Christmas season sales of poinsettias to raise funds, but according to a US-based researcher, so do Planned Parenthood and other abortionists in the US. James Hartline, a Christian activist in California wrote to LifeSiteNews.com warning that the poinsettias decorating the churches and homes of Christians in the US could easily originate from a family-owned business that has been supporting abortion for decades.

The Ecke Ranch in Encinitas, California, supplies 70% of all of the poinsettias sold in the United States and the Ecke family is among the most generous supporters of Planned Parenthood and long-time political activists for the abortion movement. The Ecke family features prominently in the major donors list in the fall 2005 edition of the San Diego/Riverside County Planned Parenthood Newsletter.

In November 2005, the Ecke family were present at the dedication of the new Carlsbad California Planned Parenthood facility renovation for which they had donated $250,000. In gratitude for their life-long support, the facility’s directors gave the Ecke family a catered dinner to honour them for their support of abortion.

Paul Ecke, the heir to the three-generation poinsettia empire, said of his siblings' upbringing as political abortion activists, "As children, we licked a lot of envelopes, we made a lot of phone calls, we walked door-to-door to encourage people to vote.” Among those causes, he said was promoting Planned Parenthood.

In an interview today, Hartline called for a boycott of the Ecke family’s poinsettias. Hartline told LifeSiteNews.com that acting on this information could “take millions of dollars away” from Planned Parenthood in short order.

I grew up thinking they were poisonous and therefore dangerous with small children or pets around, so we never had them.

It was just something that I'd never even thought about buying until I got married and my wife brought one home. We don't have kids or pets so it didn't bother me. Now I know that we will never have one again unless I can somehow determine where it was grown.

Exactly! I think I was even at the grocery this past Christmas and saw them on sale - red and white - and told my oldest daughter I didn't want one at home around our 3 year old because they're poisonous. It's stuck in my craw I guess... which seems to be a good thing after reading this.

Do the manufacturers of wire coat hangers also contribute to the culture of death?

It could be that the little starter or parent piece of the Missouri plants come from Ecke's if it is indeed providing 70% of the country's plants. I think they're propogated by rooting from a piece, but I'm not positive...

I guess it's not just the plants that are poisonous...

CGK says that it has been determined that they aren't actually poisonous if eaten. However, buying them has been partly responsible for over 20 million infants being slaughtered over the past 33 years.

I found this, since everyone seems to trust Snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/poinsettia.asp,
when trying to find another reference on "poisonous" poinsettias. My mom is a master gardner, so she was my original source.

At least one local nursery run by a Freeper http://www.gdnctr.com refuses to buy from this outfit.

I bought a couple some years ago from a kid who was doing a fund raiser. They were the most beautiful pointsettas i'd ever seen. I could never find any as nice as those since, so I haven't gotten them. Hubby doesn't like them anyway, so that's the end of that I suppose.

Your comma at the end of Snopes' URL renders the link useless. Maybe the mods could fix it?

Oops, sorry about that! I'll post it again - as I think all the mods can do is pull the post anyway.

Sounds like an opportunity for a pro-life floral grower! Get into the poinsettia market and get your product out there!
