5th & Final Day of Hearings
This morning, the Senate Judiciary Cmte. convenes for a final session in the nomination hearings of Judge Samuel Alito. Outside witnesses who did not testify at yes- terday's hearings are given an opportunity to offer their opinions on the nominee. The Cmte. meets again to vote, either to approve or reject, on Tues., Jan. 17

Another Kennedy bites the dust:
NORWALK, Conn. (Jan. 13) - The state's highest court has upheld Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel's murder conviction, according to the victim's mother, who said she was notified of the decision by prosecutors.
Skakel, a nephew of Ethel Kennedy, was convicted in 2002 of bludgeoning his neighbor, Martha Moxley, to death with a golf club in 1975 in wealthy Greenwich. Skakel, who along with the victim was 15 at the time, is serving 20 years to life in prison.
FOFLOL!! They already have 40-odd cameras documenting this whole circus.
Did Kennedy just say he wants this "broad's" view?
RE: her speaking for the dignity of women, I can't help picturing partial birth abortion. She speaks with such a "sweet" little voice, but the words she says are so chilling that I can picture her performing the "procedure" with her own hands.

Democrats had the "floor" most of the day. Their witnesses are making fools of themselves, especially Tribe. Specter has toyed with a few of them. Reps up now.
It's their panel...and they all seem to be troubled for some reason or another. We're reliving Kates abortion and the 60's civil rights movement....it's a trip down memory lane. Trip being the operative word...
WTH??? Now that is just weird.
And I don't say that just because of my extended exposure to him and his political career.
The cloying, insistent need to render "constituent service"-even the most meaningless, and at times counterproductive-not out of any abiding faith in public service, but merely in order to perpetuate his own fetid political career, and accomplish his pernicious political aims.
This faux modesty, and incomprehensible compulsion to appear "objective"-even as he realizes that being an avowed leftist wouldn't cost him much popularity in a state like this-when even the most clueless lay observer can discern his base political objectives.
In fact, his whole modus operandi is partisanship above all else, which makes his ridiculous posturing appear even more absurd.
At least Feingold-as repugnant as his views are-is sincere in his beliefs.
You can understand where he's coming from, just as you could easily comprehend the beliefs of a Trotskyite, or Jehovah's Witness, or any other true believer, whose views don't hold any nuance.
If for some inexplicable reason-maybe the accidental ingestion of a batch of shrooms-President Bush were to nominate someone like Kathleen Sullivan, or Akhil Reed Amar, or some other doctrinaire liberal, Feingold would probably vote for that nominee.
Schumer-on the other hand-is a completely different beast.
His internal circuitry is such that the goal itself-even presuming for a moment that it reflects his genuine beliefs-is subordinated to the actors.
He's a Democrat, he hates Bush, therefore he must oppose everything that Bush suggests.
Even if Bush were to nominate Alan Dershowitz I'm convinced that Schumer would find a reason to vote against him.
It is such a fundamentally bizarre way of thinking that I can't even begin to comprehend it.

It's a smarter strategy than what the Dems are doing.
Mary Landreiu (sp?) might. Her state is pretty conservative and recently got a lot redder.
Maybe also Bingaman and Nelson (FL) as they are also up for re-election in 06
Byron "Helmet Head" Dorgan is up for re-election next November, so he'll probably vote for Alito.
