OVID NY Two teenagers were charged Tuesday after allegedly having a rifle in the parking lot of South Seneca Central Junior/Senior High School at 7263 Main St.
District Superintendent Janie Nusser said a student came on campus with a rifle in her car to give it to the rifles owner who was another student. She said they made the transfer in the school parking lot in violation of board policy and state law.
I think when students saw the rifle, they were concerned and reported it to adults and we immediately called law enforcement, Nusser said.
I think what heightened peoples concerns was the student that was the owner of the gun had been involved in an argument with another student just prior to the transfer. At this time in the investigation, we do not see a connection between the two incidents.
Nusser said the incident happened at the end of the school day and reports of a lockdown are untrue.
Its an ongoing investigation, so for me to give you much information would be premature, she said.
Nusser would not name the students, but Seneca County sheriffs deputies charged Jeffrey R. Warne, 17, of 7904 Route 89, Interlaken, and Jessica L. Prindle-Ike, 16, of 8494 Mill St., Lodi, with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Deputies said the .22-caliber rifle was not pointed at anyone during the incident.
The teens were ticketed and are to appear Jan. 30 in Ovid Town Court.
A lot of things are against the "law". Many of them supposedly protected by the Constitution, particularly anything involving arms.
I wonder how many don't realize the laws apply to all the property of the school, not just the buildings? But you are right, it's a stupid law, completely ignored by its putative targets.

So did I and Alec Baldwin's father was the coach.
Would it make you happier if they went to the parking lot of the local stop-and-rob and passed them there?
How 'bout that! Does he stay with Alec when he's in France? :)
Sure, it's a private business. They can't throw you in jail or fine you for it though, unless you refuse to leave when asked, then it's trespassing. A school, except a private school, is a public place, and is at least quasi governmental as well. They are restricted by the constitution, whereas the mall management is not.
We shot archery, .22's, and skeet.
Our school nickname was Redneck Middle, so we were probably the exception to the rule, but it was fun.
"Would it make you happier if they went to the parking lot of the local stop-and-rob and passed them there?"
Sure. That would be better.
New York being one of them. Which is part of why I think an arrest, even if legally justified, was a moral overreaction. These kids were in the parking lot with a legal rifle that one of them owned.
Kids doing dumb things.
1980s for me. Virginia Beach City Schools, NJROTC Program. Bolt action .22 rifles.
There's also a federal law. It was thrown out by the Supreme Court once, on the grounds that schools are not commerce and so the Congress has no power to pass such a law. However Congress, in it's infinite Wisdom, sprinkled a little more "Interstate Commerce" pixie dust on it, and passed it again. AFAIK, it's not been back to the Supreme Court for another test.
Mr. Baldwin was a good guy with good instincts. I have no idea what his own politics were but with the screw-ball kids running around I wonder if he raised them red or they are all in deep rebellion.
I know the four of them (but through business, not Massapequa) and Alec's ideas about Bush and Co. are mild compared to Daniel's or Billy's. And, don't believe the born-again hype about Stephen, I know it's bull.
The mall is PRIVATE property. So, yes their policy can "trump" your constitutional rights. But that doesn't mean you have to patronize their stores.
There you go standing in the way of fanaticism.
correction: Adults doing dumb things.
Apply that head, and it's common sense. The Geeks and other good kids are not the problem, the gang bangers are. Everyone in the school knows which is which. Use some discretion. Give the good kids a stern warning, if you must, and report the gang bangers, who are likely illegally in possession anyway, with the school property issue not being a factor.
Carter
and then Reagan.
