Day 3: Questioning Continues
This morning, Round 1 concludes with Senators on the Judiciary Cmte. who did not question nominee Alito yesterday. During Round 2, questioning is limited to 20 minutes for each of the eight- een senators. Chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA) leads off, followed by the others, alternating by party in order of seniority.
WEDS., 9:30AM ET, C-SPAN
You are right that it's a tactic to delay. Kennedy just made a comment during the lunch break about the having sent the letter to Specter in Dec., that Specter's staff said they wouldn't subpoena the info, and that he intends to bring it up again after lunch.
They'd better be trying something else, because Alito has the upper hand so far.
How stupid is it for the Dems to rile Specter, the chairman of the committee, who agrees with them on so many other issues?
But, we'll see if Specter ends up letting them make an issue out of it, and spend all of that time searching through those Princeton Alumni papers in order to delay and try to destroy Alito.
I'm not sure if I've ever seen a president campaign for someone other than the incumbent in his party.
My guess is that the President probably wouldn't have minded having Pat Toomey in there, as being more conservative than Specter, and if Toomey had been the incumbent, GW would have been there for him. Just my thought.
R]ecords of Concerned Alumni are contained at the Library of Congress in the papers of William A. Rusher, a leader of the group and a former publisher of National Review. Those records and others at Mudd Library at Princeton give no indication that Judge Alito, who sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was among the groups major donors. He was not an active leader of the group, and two of his classmates who were involved and Mr. Rusher said they did not remember his playing a role.
Absolutely. As easy as you or I with a computer and an internet connection.
CSPAN just finished interviewing some guy from the Boston Globe...it's his feeling that the 'Rats are setting up the old "we need more documents and information regarding this stealth candidate" and will make the motion to delay these hearings for a week or more.
This appearance by President Bush is really good. Too bad it won't get wider coverage.
"I was wondering if you really need a subpoena to get paper out of the Library of congress. Shouldn't any senator be able to get them?"
Well sure if you're Sandy Burglar you just stuff them down your pants and socks.
Then can get that automatically..any member can request a one week holdover..it's in the Senate rules..nothing the GOP can do..
yes. If they are available to the public which I believe all records in the LOC are (except active administration records or records deemed top secret).
I'm not sure what the status of these records are but I can't imagine that publication records from 30 years ago are either secret or relevent to the current administration.
Now, my experience with the LOC is very limited so maybe someone with more experience can add to this?
What Kennedy and the other 'Rats are doing is quite simple. They have been firing at our troops for years from the safety of their foxholes, but now they are beaten and their base won't accept that. So they are all coming out of their foxholes in a BANZAI CHARGE yelling "You Die Marine"! They are being shot to pieces while our boys secure the island and take over SCOTUS.
I am having trouble visualizing Ted and the rest getting out of any foxhole, though. Pity the poor b*st*rd that had to dig a foxhole big enough to fit Jack's brother.
He is doing great! today.. very concise and plain-spoken. Audience is being receptive.
Here's what I think his response should be:
"Senator, the documents to which you refer were made available to the Library of Congress some months ago. Your request should have been made to that organization, rather than to me. You had four months to prepare for this hearing, and if you failed to do so, that does not obligate this committee to provide you with additional time to accomplish what should have been done during the preparation period."
The mortality rate and health records of women connected with the Kennedys would fill a book.
President Bush is always on top of his game when he is out with 'us kind' -- that's why the media rarely covers him.
Bwahahahaha!
I'm sure staffers are very busy right now. It would be sweet if Spectre came back and said, "You don't need a subpoena, just go look at them". Then, no excuse for a delay without it being really obvious that it is tactical and nothing else.
Maybe a "Whale hole" to fit Ted.
"PFAW Seeking Access to Records of 'Concerned Alumni of Princeton'"
they are fishing for something else
Judge Napolitano gets called tomorrow....watch..Dems can then scream about FOX news..
