Important Dog Food Recall (over 100 dogs have died since Diamond Pet Food recall began in Dec)
The Weekly ^ | January 10, 2006

Please read the information below and pass it along if you know anyone who is currently feeding their dog Diamond Pet Food because over 100 dogs have died since the recall in December!

Even though Diamond, Country Value and Professional brand dog foods have been recalled for containing highly toxic aflatoxins, they have caused at least 100 dog deaths in recent weeks, say Cornell University veterinarians, who are growing increasingly alarmed.

While dogs keep dying from eating pet food tainted with aflatoxin, Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine is announcing it has developed protein tests that accurately indicate a dog's liver failure caused by the toxin.

Dog owners may want to seek veterinary testing for animals that have been fed affected lots of food even if they are apparently well. Recent experience has shown that apparently healthy dogs can develop liver damage after 2-3 weeks.

Diamond Pet Food has set up a website and toll free phone number to answer all questions relating to the recall. Information can be found at: Diamond Pet Food Recall http://www.diamondpetrecall.net/

We hope that this information can save some lives by reaching those who were not aware of the recall or the terrible impact it has had. Our thoughts go out to those that have lost their beloved dogs and hope the suffering is brought to a halt with increased coverage of this story.

she threw up a bird in my lap.

Yucko. I know Russel's will eat anything as I said. You reminded me however, my friends dog that died used to always puke up toads in the house.

I am laughing so hard I got a stomach ache.

Been feedin' this stuff to my dog for a couple of years...She doesn't have any of the symptoms...I switched brands yesterday

Diamond is a good product. That's what bothers me about all the reporting; it makes it sound like the company uses poison in their foods, when this toxin could be in any brand. A similar toxin is often found in peanuts.

I think she might have eaten some moldy mulch in my azalea bed

I may be mistaken, but I believe azalea itself is poisonous to dogs.

Yesterday was the first day I saw anything on it other than on FR. It was on CNBC scrolling news ticker and the CNN website. Definitely slow in getting the news out!

Bump

I was channeling surfing and I saw that one of the networks had a story on this on their nightly news so the information should reach more people

Well, I haven't heard about it except at FR, but I'm way over on the west coast that isn't affected by it.

Since you're on the west coast, you've got bigger problems. Watch out for Governors on motorcycles.

yes azaleas are poison but the liver test indicated an aflatoxin, which means mold. I guess if the azaleas were moldy it would be a double whammy.

I can laugh about it now but the drive home with the bird in my lap wasn't too funny. It's also funny that the fact that she had eaten the dead bird had nothing to do with why I took her to the vet. She had an itchy ear condition and needed some special cream. I would never have known about the bird if she had thrown it up in the yard.

There's no way to be sure pet food isn't contaminated... its just terrible what happened to all those poor dogs.

You are dead on target. Azaleas are poisonous and can cause gasrointestinal upset and cardic dysfunction.

There is no way to be sure any food for pets or humans isn't contaminated. Aflatoxin has also been found in numerous peanut products--sorry, I know we all love that stuff but facts are facts. Recall the Listeria (bacteria that infects the brainstem) outbreak in humans eating contaminated cheese a few years back. Several people died.
