NBC Draws Fire for Book of Daniel

(AgapePress) - A pro-family media researcher is blasting NBC for plans to air a controversial series featuring a troubled Episcopal priest and other dysfunctional characters.

The network will air The Book of Daniel on Friday evenings, starting in early January. According to published reports, the weekly show centers around an Episcopal priest named Daniel Webster who talks with a manifestation of Jesus. In addition, the Webster family reportedly includes a 23-year-old homosexual, Republican son; a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer; and an adopted son involved in an improper relationship with the bishop's daughter.

Ed Vitagliano is director of research for the American Family Association. He says the program mocks Christianity.

Ed Vitagliano
"While we certainly recognize that Christians do have problems, and they have problems in their families, it seems that Hollywood consistently wants to focus on those types of Christians and those types of ministers -- when the reality is that many, many more are hard-working," Vitagliano says. "They work hard to have good family lives -- just like a lot of people do -- and are faithful to scripture."

According to the AFA spokesman, advertisers who underwrite the program will be monitored -- and that information will be distributed far and wide.

"We will be reviewing this, and we will be letting AFA supporters know exactly what is on this program," he says. "And [we will be] holding advertisers accountable for what appears to be yet one more show that's going to dog the Christian faith."

AFA is calling on TV viewers to send a letter through its website asking NBC affiliates to refuse to air the show. Dr. Don Wildmon, AFA chairman and founder, contends the network's decision to air the series "reflects the anti-Christian bias which exists at the highest levels of the network."

It seems like they try all these family shows and they fail because nobody watches them. All you guys that are complaining did not watch American Dreams, Arrested Development, etc. Why not? You know why not, because you like to complain!!!! Just like the rest of us who actually enjoyed watching Friends, CSI, etc.
Actually, they do have a family show on called Everwood. Does anybody on this post watch that? Probably not because they probably think it is too family oriented.
Oh ya, they had a Christian show called Joan of Arcadia. Did you watch this wholesome show? No and guess what the network took it off. So stop whining and watch the shows they officer that have family values or shut the hell up and let the networks put on what people will watch like maybe this Daniel story.

"AFA is calling on TV viewers to send a letter through its website... "

I already sent one...through MSNBC's website.

As soon as I know who is financing this debauchery, I will stop using their products!

Haven't heard me complaining, have you?

If I was the sort of person who told tales out of school, I could top ANYthing in that TV show with true stories from my former parish (and the parish before that).

Unfortunately, the ECUSA has been a refuge for fruits, nuts, and flakes for years and years. It has just now all come out in the open where it can no longer be ignored.

"If I was the sort of person who told tales out of school, I could top ANYthing in that TV show with true stories from my former parish (and the parish before that)."

And it's not just the Episcopal Church, either. My Presbyterian church in the early 1960's was a hotbed of barely-concealed scandal.

We had a 70-year-old deacon who all the high school girls knew to keep at a distance. He had what they called "Roman" hands.

The minister, who had been there for about 10 years at that time, had a son who was the chief bully at the high school. He ended up being arrested for writing bad checks. The daughter, who was a couple of years younger, had a well-deserved reputation as a wild child...a "sure thing" as we boys put it.

Finally, though, the minister was fired. It seems the minister's wife was playing around with another deacon, and got caught by the deacon's wife. So they fired the minister...something I never quite understood. He left town. The wife and the two rotten kids stayed there. The deacon she was messing with divorced his wife and married the former minister's wife. The deacon had a teenaged son, who promptly impregnated the daughter of the former minister.

The deacon with the Roman hands finally got caught with a 14-year-old girl in the church library. They were in a "compromising" position. He got a suspended sentence, of course, since he was a "pillar of the community."

Lots of interesting stories in the minister's house in many churches, I suspect.

Setting aside your grammar corrections and then your anecdotal evidence attacking "many churches"... -back to the issue and as you state "interesting stories"

Many people have sex legitimately and thier stories may be quite interesting as well --to those that enjoy pornography...

WHY do the idiots in the media think that this is the kind of programming that will attract large "media market share"??

It resonates well in their Liberal echo chamber - that's their "reality."

We're complaining for the same reasons we complain about the heretical & apostate behavior of the Episcopal Church...because it tars all Christians with the same brush. In particular, Christians in the catholic traditions (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopalian) because to the average unchurched "Joe" out there, there isn't a nickel's worth of difference between any of us. And let's not forget - this is supposed to be a COMEDY, except this isn't good-natured humor that helps us to laugh at our own shortcomings & foibles. You can bet that the weekly "moral" will not be how this family's Christian faith is bringing them through the trials of life in the world. No. I think it's safe to say that, once again, Christians & Jesus, Himself, will be the butt of the joke & the weekly message will be that the Christian family is just as dysfuntional & sinful as the Atheist's family...the main difference being that the Christian family has someplace they have to go on Sunday morning!

From Chanell 11 in San Francisco, replied as follows

R - thank you for your note.
"The Book of Daniel" is a fictional drama about an Episcopalian priest's family and the contemporary issues with which they must grapple. We're confident that once audiences view this quality drama themselves, they'll appreciate this thought-provoking examination of one American family.

My response
Give me a break; the show touts a wife who relies on mid-day martinis, a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter. At the office, the priest's lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister-in-law.
These are not contemporary issues, they are perverted issues. Homosexuals make up about 1.5% of the population yet are seen in over 60% of the show and about 30% of all the characters. Yet this show present them as though they are normal and common. Check out the statistics, homosexuals are more likely to commit suicide or die of some disease before they reach 45. Something like 80% were molested in their early teens by an older adult of the same sex. There is nothing normal, healthy or common about them.

It is sick to say that this will be a "thought-provoking examination of one American family." Are you saying your family is like this? Mine isn't.
The real issues are how do we let our children grow up free from perverts who want to molest them, and show that show it as normal? To stay a virgin until they are married, and for our boys to grow into responsible men. Or how our culture is being constantly degraded by sick show as "The Book of Daniel" Where are your morals to say you support this garbage?

This show is nothing but a Marxist propaganda. It meets several of the Communist Goals (1963) as presented to the House of Representatives.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Maybe it would help if Christians Hired a PR firm that did a PR blitz that said Christians chop off peoples heads, Blow innocent people up and stab their daughters to death if they step out of line.... I mean what can it hurt since they are treating us like we do those things anyway.

You see we wouldn't have to actually do those things, it would just be a branding kind of issue. Mearly capturing a specific marketing identity. We could still do all that "love your enemy stuff" but maybe just emphasis some new skills and abilities we can learn. (sarcasm off)
