(FR) JC Penny has been running identical advertisements for its upcoming sale this weekend on both English and Spanish TV stations. Identical except for one thing, on Univision (the Spanish network available on American cable systems) the JC Penny graphics are calling it the "Navidad"(Christmas in Spanish) sale while on English channels the graphics read "holiday" sale.
When asked by a member of Freerepublic.com why Christmas was appropriate for one ad but not the other, a female JC Penny representative at 1-800-322-1189 replied "its possible the person producing the Spanish version of the ad did not know the Spanish word for holiday"
In light of the complaints recieved by home improvement store Lowes, where it was shown they used "holiday" trees in English signage and "Navidad"(Christmas)trees for their spanish versions which led them to end the policy, its hoped pressure on JC Penny can have the same result.
"However, it does offend me when retailers engage in sillyness like changing the name of Christmas trees to "Holiday trees"."
Yeah, that's just stupidity. I know of no other holiday where an evergreen tree is brought inside, decorated and lit with presents under it. I don't care what religion someone is or isn't, that is a Christmas tree, plain and simple.
Lotsa folks gonna be surprised when they meet someone in the afterlife and his name isn't Jesus Holiday.
I've seen several Sears ads, TV and newspaper. There is no mention of a Holiday at all.
They simply show a blue Christmas Tree ornament.
Would a store sell Holiday Seven-Branched Candelabrum Kits? I think not. As many people said to me Happy Thanksgiving as they said Happy Christopher Columbus day. In other words, not many.
Every Liberal knows by attacking the Christian faith with political correctness it is a direct assualt on Christian Conservatives. There is nothing good natured about it. It is a mean, spit in your face attack. Just calling it like it is.
I will 'Ditto' your comments.
A salesclerk wishing me a "Happy Holiday" doesn't bother me.
However the Holiday Tree, Winter Holiday, etc is driving me crazy.
Xmas (or X-mas) is an abbreviation for Christmas. It is derived from the word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, transliterated as Christos, which is Greek for Christ. Greek is the language in which the whole New Testament was written.
Originally, in "Xmas", X represented the Greek letter <math>\chi</math> (see chi. It was pronounced with a hard [kh], which is the first letter of Christ's name in Greek. However, because of the modern interpretations of the letter X, many people do not know this and assume that this abbreviation is meant to drop Christ from Christmas as a means of secularization or political correctness vehicle.
You are absolutely right. found on the web:
The occasionally seen belief that the X represents the cross Christ was crucified on has no basis in fact; St Andrew's Cross is X-shaped, but Christ's cross was probably shaped like a T or a â . Indeed, X-as-chi was associated with Christ long before X-as-cross could be. The use of X as an abbreviation for cross in modern abbreviated writing (e.g. "Kings X" for "Kings Cross") may have reinforced this assumption.
In ancient Christian art <math>\chi</math> and <math>\chi\rho</math> (Chi Ro--the first two letters in Greek of Christos) are abbreviations for Christ's name. In many manuscripts of the New Testament and icons, X is an abbreviation for Christos, as is XC (the first and last letters in Greek, using the lunate sigma); compare IC for Jesus in Greek. The Oxford English Dictionary documents the use of this abbreviation back to 1551, 50 years before the first English colonists came to North America and 60 years before the King James Version of the Bible was completed. At the same time, Xian and Xianity were in frequent use as abbreviations of "Christian" and "Christianity".
The abbreviation is widely but not universally accepted; some view it as demeaning to Christ, whilst others find it helpful to use in text messages and emails to save space. Similarly,Xianity is sometimes used as the abbreviation for Christianity (although this usage is much less common than "Xmas"). This usage has extended to "xtal" for "crystal", and on florists' signs "xant" for "chrysanthemum".
In the animated television show Futurama, which is set in the 31st century, Xmas is the official name for the day formerly known as Christmas.
I agree.
No listen to it again they are singing Happy Honda Days, and showing you a Honda Accord,
Do you buy holiday gifts or christmas gifts?
I don't know, I think I'll cut them some slack on that one.
I'm getting chided by some folks because I put my Christmas lights up 2 weeks ago and started listening to Chrismas music on Nov. 1st....
Ok so since we are boycotting all the folks who do this I have a real problem.
Where can I buy my Christmas gifts ? I think the only thing left is the 7-11.
How about Huge Christmas Sale. There, isn't that simple?
I don't know how people have the time to check each and every store. I went shopping today and my focus sure wasn't on what store used "holiday" or "christmas".
I'm gonna run out of places to shop. First Target, then Wal Mart, then Lands End, now JC Penney. I wonder how LL Bean is with the "Christmas" vs "Holidays" issue. ;)
It's all so confusing.
You know what? I could care less! Why we are fixated on this instead of the TRUE meaning of the season, is beyond me. Our priorities are all mixed up, IMO.
btw, I just got the LLBean Catalog...."Best of the Holiday's" :)
Just like TJMaxx. I eamiled them last week but they have not replied. I called their corporate headquarters in MA and they had no answer other than the word Christmas is only for one particular group. Well, Hanukkah is for one particular group. Nothing wrong with a Hanukkah sign, what's wrong with one saying Christmas?
Nope. Citgo - unless you want to support the fascist Chavez and make his holidays merry.
We're not lemmings. Shop where you want. It's just a bunch of us are tired of being taken for granted by the retailers and are doing something about it. Anyone who things this is just really about "Happy Holidays" is nuts. I think it was just the final straw this year.
