Missile Attack On Passenger Jet?
Radio News | November 28, 2005

Posted on 11/28/2005 4:49:25 AM PST by texianyankee

I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket."

I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.

McIntyre in the Morning on KABC 790 AM has been heavily covering this story today. They have the audio quoted in the WND story above. There are a lot of conflicting things in this story, but it seems that where there is [a trail of] smoke there is some kind of fire.

Would this rocket, if that is what it was, have been fired from a boat or ship?

Ping to Velveeta's post of a published summary of the incident and link.

The existing evidence would seem to refute all of those claims.

Bump!

Re: USCG ship traffic. http://www.uscg.mil/d11/sectorlalb/vtsbranch.htm this might help but they probably monitor only large ships.

If it was a missile, it could have been fired from any one of the thousands of small pleasure craft or fishing boats from along that coastline.

Boat, ship or perhaps even from the shore.

IMO, Americans better be removing their blinders.

Here's what Laura Mansfield has found the jihadi's reading on the jihadi forums:

The latest. Cashill has a link on his related article at WND. It is processed image of radar. It shows the AA flight, taking off from LAX then turn south (I had mistakenly thought it had been north, before). As the AA flight reaches a bit over 6000 feet, a bogey shows up and tracks it, a near miss. The bogey then separates and fall off the radar. It was a missle. I am completely sure of it now. Also, I will now go on record as saying it pretty much had to come from a boat. The boat most likely came from King Harbor.

Enter Nov. 26, 12:49 using the pull down menu up top, click on 20-mile range over at the upper right, and then click on "start."

You will see every airplane aloft in the Los Angeles area on the map. In about a half minute, "AAL612" appears as a green aircraft crossing the shoreline, taking off from LAX (the grey area near the 405 at the end of Century Blvd). If you click on the aircraft, it will turn red, and the flight data will appear in a box to the right. Over the next few minutes, the aircraft turns south. At approximately 6,000 feet and off the coast of Redondo Beach, a new target will appear.

I just watched, and sure enough a new target does appear at 6000 ft. It stays on screen for a minute and then the first AA612 disappears (leaving the "new" target green). If you then click on the "new" target, it has AA612's flight info.

Most of all how did the early news report get their information and why did they STOP reporting it?

This is very interesting to me. ABC News reported it as the serious story it was, even with the caveat that it was probably a bottle rocket or whatever. Obviously, they were told to cease and desist. By what authority? Who speaks to the media and informs them that national security prevents them from broadcasting further on this? (If the story was nothing, normally there is a quick update stating that it's nothing and why.)

Now, if we had some kind of hostage situation and the authorities were battling the clock to bust our guys free, I can understand BOTH the government shutting down the media on the secret op, and the media not reporting it. Here, where is the national security or "loose lips" problem?

After 9/11 I thought it was the position of the administration to OVER-report risks in order to CYA. I want a robust economy, sure, but I am not willing to hide airline flight risks in order to keep it.

6000 feet in a couple seconds? That's no bottle rocket. Amazing proof that demands some sort of explanation.

Very observant of you. Also, did you notice how once the apparent missile engaged the jet, it stuck to it like glue for a while, then, after burn out, peeled off and then went back off the radar screen (presumably as it descended back below 1500 ft)?

For the ATC system to get confused like that, the bogey must have gotten really really close to the jet. Seems like that jet missed its doom by only a hair.

You have expressed the conflict within the reporting well.

Each time I am ready to give up following this thread something new develops or someone like you points out why we should not "just move along".

It certainly needs a further explanation than has been given officially.
