AgapePress) - An official with a pro-family group reports that a boycott campaign aimed at Target Stores nationwide has succeeded in attracting hundreds of thousands of consumers who say they intend to shop elsewhere during what is traditionally the busiest shopping weekend of the year.
On Friday (Nov. 18) the American Family Association (AFA) launched on online boycott campaign against Target, citing the retailer's decision to ban Salvation Army kettles from their store entrances as well as the use of "Merry Christmas" in their in-store promotions and retail advertising. By the following Monday, almost 300,000 individuals had "signed" an online petition indicating they planned to express their disapproval of that decision by avoiding Target Stores during the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. At press time, that number had jumped to more than 340,000

I was at the post office yesterday and saw a poster advertising seasonal stamps for sale. The stamps included were: Kwanzaa, Hannuka, Eid, and Holiday.
Very good point ! :)
"I know over 50% of my money spent during this season is spent for reasons other than Christmas, I mean besides my normal expenses even, because most of the people I'm buying gifts for this time of the year are Jewish or "none of the above"."
Oh man, you are unbelievable. So your small world represents the entire USA? Let me help you out - 90% of America is buying crap for Christmas not Hannaka, Kwanza or any other festivus holiday. That is the truth like it or not. Perhaps you and your friends think the world is flat - that doesnt make it so.
Let me help you out, leading with insults proves you know you're wrong.
Most people are buying presents because you buy people presents this time of year. Gift exchange is another part of the modern "Christmas" celebration that has no basis in Christian doctrine or even Christian tradition until very recently in the 2000 year history of the religion, recently being after the industrial revolution when free market retail became a major driving force in western civilization. So claiming they're buying because of Christ is as ignorant of the historical facts as claiming decorated evergreens are inherrently Christian.
Perhaps you'll find a way to make a fact based point instead of resorting to pathetic ad hominems... I won't hold my breath though.
Talked to one last year who was an 80something D-Day vet. He was doing it to keep busy!
So claiming they're buying because of Christ
I sure agree with you there. This whole thing is ridiculous.
Non-Lit means it's artificial and doesn't have lights pre-strung on it which is all the rage these days in either white or color. The ad actually shows both an "evergreen" and an white tree.
But you see, that's OK! There were no stamps when Christ was around so this is a new tradition that has been started to honor Holiday! So now you can buy Kwanzaa stamps, Hannuka stamps, Eid stamps and Holiday stamps!
I hope you feel as special as I do that the government has honored 85% of the population just as our retailers do.
Our Kmart is lousy too. They don't care most of the stuff they advertise. They rarely restock the shelves. AND it's overpriced, IMO.
Ohmigosh. That reminds me of the year when my mother paid way too much money to have our tree "flocked" with this gawdawful pink sparkly stuff.... just to match our decor you know ;-). You have to think early 1960's (Beaver Cleaver years) to picture this....
OK, that's FOUR strikes against the Fake Martha Steward Non-Lit Tree! :-)
Actually I just got back from the US Post Awful where I bought some seasonal stamps of the Madonna and Baby Jesus.
Must have missed the Madonna and Child http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/display_products/productDetail.jsp?OID=4849179
Different one every year.
I only buy a fresh cut tree and keep the local Boy Scouts "in business" with my overpriced tree :-) which I know to be part donation to the troop.
And at least my fresh cut tree is grown right here in the U.S. of A. by a tree farmer who supplies the Boy Scouts. I would wager $ that the "Martha Stewart Non-Lit Tree" is made in China.
Must have decided they liked this one. There's always a Madonna and Child stamp (at least since the 80s probably much earlier) but they switch the specific art frequently.
Was it the Holiday Madonna and Baby Jesus or the Christmas Madonna and Baby Jesus?
Side question related to a link I found in your profile: Are you familiar with the Twilight:2000 series or Traveller series?
My church sets up a Christmas tree in honor of the birth of Jesus, but we don't worship the tree - we worship God - not a graven image - not an idol. Just because a tree is in church doesn't mean it is being worshiped as an idol. Other objects are in our church also, but they aren't being worshiped. Only Jesus the Son of God is worshiped in my church.
