Don't know how many of you caught Rep. John Murtha's very angry, very moving speech just now in which he called on the White House to institute an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. CNN didn't air the entire thing, but as I listened to it, I could feel the ground shift. Murtha, as you know, is not a Pelosi-style Chardonnay Democrat; he's a crusty retired career Marine who reminds me of the kinds of beer-slugging Democrats we used to have before the cultural left took over the party. Murtha, a conservative Dem who voted for the war, talked in detail about the sacrifices being borne by our soldiers and their families, and about his visits out to Walter Reed to look after the maimed, and how we've had enough, it's time to come home. He was hell on the president too.
If tough, non-effete guys like Murtha are willing to go this far, and can make the case in ways that Red America can relate to -- and listening to him talk was like listening to my dad, who's about the same age, and his hunting buddies -- then the president is in big trouble. I'm sure there's going to be an anti-Murtha pile-on in the conservative blogosphere, but from where I sit, conservatives would be fools not to take this man seriously.

JUST FYI RE: MURTHA [Kathryn Jean Lopez] This is an old note for him:
Murtha: Iraq Unwinnable By Erin P. Billings and Emily Pierce Roll Call Staff May 6, 2004
Signaling a new, more aggressive line against the Bush administrations policy on Iraq, Rep. John Murtha (Pa.), the House Democrats most visible defense hawk, will join Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) today to make public his previously private statements that the conflict is unwinnable.

Hmmmm?? I believe it's you, Rod Dreher, who we will not take seriously.
Anybody with a brain knows that we cannot bring our troops home now .. unless we want the whole of the middle east to collapse and the attacks upon America to begin again.
The Dems just love dragging out "decorated Vietnam Veterans" to plead their unilateral surrender case. John Kerry is the Poster Boy of that tactic.
You're much too kind, Sir.
According to Brit Hume, this traitor has been anti-war since 2003. He is a lying dim, and wants to return his party to power at ANY cost... even the destruction of America!
MUCK FURTHA
LLS
He does NOT represent the people and has no chance of re-election. Maybe that is why he is going out in a blast???
You nailed it exactly.
It's all about politics.
I don't give a damn what Murtha says, the United States Marine Corps is not going to disgrace the memory of those who paid the ultimate price in Iraq and their families by pulling out before the job is finished. PERIOD!
And I called Murtha's office today and told them that exactly!
I also told Murtha's office that Murtha disgraced the Marine Corps today with his remarks.

Did this make your day, Chamberlainbuff (aka Bushbashbuff)?
Just like the Japs resorting to kamikaze tactics.
You never answered me or any of your critics on the last thread, how do you expect to churn any sympathy with this poor sad old man who the Democrats trotted out.
I totally agree with you. I think it starts with the President getting out and pushing for the coverage of the news and such.
Do you think Pres Bush will go by Iraq on the way home to show how safe it is there and to encourage the voting coming up. It would sure be a big lift to the troops and something he should do more often.
Rod Dreher is a self described Crunchy Con who cares too much how he is perceived by others. He is an unconfident conservative.
Murtha, IMHO, has long ago picked party over country. He is often dispatched by the fringe Lefties that run the party to give their unpatriotic policies cover.
I think President Bush should make a stop over in Iraq and give a speech to the nation and just rip the democrats and a few republicans a new one. This is so disgusting what is happening.
AS it happens, I think precipitous withdrawal is a bad idea. I opposed the invasion, it was a mistake, but we would compound it by pulling out in the face of rebel fire. That said, we can't stay forever, as some freepers seem to want - - and new invasions of surrounding countries (which some freepers also want) would be lunacy.
"Oh, did the earth move for you too? I'm sure it did for all other America-hating liberals, democrats and assorted socialist pukes as well. Obviously Murtha has gone soft and is full of democrat horse hocky."
Ouch! churchie, you got your booty spanked by THE MAN!

The man sold his soul
I'd just like to add that Murtha is not conservative. I live in his district. Johnstown, the city which he is based is in ruin. His name is always in the paper for bringing some type of work to the area but the city remains a mess. However, his picture and name is plastered all of the place, billboards, streets, and buildings. I guess that is his idea of economic development. During the election of 2000 when the dems were trying to keep the military ballots from being counted, he was silent. He claims to represent the military but expressed little outrage when Gore lawyers attempted to disenfranchise the vote of soldiers.
He is a northeastern blue state democrat, not my idea of a conservative!
Murtha can go to the....... Dems.(can we say "hell" on FR? oh well. dems, hell, same thing) If we pull out now, 9/11 will look like a teddy bear picnic.
