The two Ecuadorean day laborers were standing outside the East Hampton train station yesterday at 7:15 a.m. hoping for a daily job in construction, landscaping, painting or anything.
But thanks to an aggressive campaign by the East Hampton Village Police Department aimed at cracking down on undocumented workers and the people who hire them, they were out of luck.

The problem in many places is that the folks want to save money by paying contractors who hire day laborers, but they don't want those day laborers hanging around their train stations and convenience stores at 7:00 in the morning.
Within 48 hours I suspect there will be no day laborers hanging around the East Hampton train station, but dozens of them at the next station up the line.

We have to...help this country progress," said worker Andres.Sounds as though someone is coaching worker Andres.
I really don't think that worker Andres gives one rat's patootie if this country progresses, otherwise he'd work on getting legal, then start paying taxes and really help the country progress.

What are the risks for the employer in hiring day labourers? Even if they were legal immigrants, aren't there serious liability issues if one of them is injured on the job? Would home-owner's insurance protect the employer from a law suit?

How long before we have a Paris situation on our hands because the illegals and/or their children feel they aren't "getting theirs" in this society (which, because of multiculturalism, they will despise)?

What are the risks for the employer in hiring day labourers? Even if they were legal immigrants, aren't there serious liability issues if one of them is injured on the job? Would home-owner's insurance protect the employer from a law suit? I asked a contractor friend about this. The insurance he carries doesn't cover day laborers, only direct-hire employees. So, if you've hired a contractor to do work on your property and he's using day laborers, it's your a$$ (and homeowner's insurance) on the line if somehthing happends.

True. Plus its likely that if the contractor is cutting corners by hiring illegals, he will cut corners in other areas too. Low quality materials and craftsmanship and double-dipping the customer.
