TODAY, Californians are heading to the polls to vote on several major propositions that shall dramatically affect both the political and economic future of our state.
We are following the activity and will report the results.

This has little to do with the California results, which were a reflection of deep structural problems with our state's politics and society.
A missed opportunity that may not come again.
This state is in a disastrous condition that is worsening by the month. We can't wait, dude.

And they couldn't have voted any more irrationally! First they voted Gray Davis back into office despite his dismal first term performance. Then a year later they vote him out on a recall and vote Arnold in by a large margin. Then on the first vote dealing with the budget problem they voted both for emergency measures AND another bond issue! Now they've totally repudiated everything Arnold stands for after less than 2 years in office. He may as well just go on vacation, and call in his vetoes from Tahiti! what a bunch of blockheads!
I'm so happy I left that state. I rejoice daily.

hit the people with broad based taxes to wake them up - gasoline, cable TV as someone else mentioned, car fees. Arnold is essentially a "sacrificial" governor, its not his fault, but he is stuck in the middle of this fantasy land. give the people a dose of the medicine they want, and maybe they will wake up.
It was like NYC under Dinkins. for years, the liberals screamed about the city needing a "mayor of color" to heal the city. they got one - and then got 2000 murders a year, riots, mayhem, etc. after 4 years of that, they didn't go back. 2 terms of Rudy, and 2 terms for Bloomberg.
No, that's not what I was referring to. I am upset with people that either didn't vote, or voted against all of the Governor's proposals just because they disliked the Governor.
I hope you're right. I was far more optimistic a week ago.
As a former Californian who left the state last year and now resides in Florida, I've watched quietly from the sidelines and said nothing. But I must respond to the above-quoted statement, because it sums things up perfectly.
The outcomes of the props is a tremendous disappointment... but all the doom and gloomers are missing the point. After the dust has settled, the reality is that things are not worse in California. They simply aren't any better. A massive attempt was made to improve things, and it didn't pan out. The enemy managed to maintain the status-quo... but it had to fight tooth and nail just to accomplish that. That is the lesson to be learned from this -- that the enemy is on the ropes and fighting for its survival.
Yesterday's battle was lost... but it is just one battle in a much larger war. And the truth is that the enemy was forced to use a great deal of its ammunition just to win this one battle. The enemy managed to survive, but it is weakened. Therefore, the next battle against it must be pressed even harder, forcing it to expend more ammunition just to stay alive. If this strategy is followed over time, the enemy will eventually succomb. But it will never succomb if you lose heart after this one battle and don't continue fighting the war.
The enemy is a very strong opponent, and you cannot expect him to drop from a knock-out punch in one single election. But the enemy is on the ropes, and what you must do is simply keep punching him until he eventually weakens and falls. The enemy is counting on you to despair that he didn't fall from one punch and that you'll throw in the towel and walk away. And that's the only way he can win, if you give up and leave him standing.
Don't walk away. Keep landing those punches, keep forcing the enemy to expend all his energy trying to stay on his feet. The enemy simply cannot remain standing if you force him to put all of his energy and effort into prohibiting reform and maintaining the status-quo. Stay on the offensive and keep him on the defensive.
Remember: this election was not about the enemy launching an offensive against us. It was about the enemy fighting off an offensive launched against its stronghold. It managed to fend off the attack, but it didn't gain any ground. Put all the defeated props on the ballot again next time. Force the enemy to squander all its money and resources into fighting them all over again. Keep the enemy on the defensive. Eventually, you'll wear the enemy down and deplete it resources... just as Reagan wore down the Soviet Union. It takes time and it takes patience, but it can be done if you simply stay the course.
Small wonder...a bill introduced in January that still had gone nowhere by November is one thing and one thing only: DOA.

You are DEFINITELY right about that! In reality, we didn't real lose anything. They lost a LOT of money having to defend themselves and if it weren't for all the lying TV commercials, I'll bet most of these would have passed!
Every night I was screaming at the TV when they were playing their back to back lies! At least I don't have to watch their crap anymore.

I agree that's what the people who voted against us deserve. And I agree that it could help us in future elections.
There's just one little problem: The governor would have to agree to these taxes. And if he does, it will blur the differences between the parties, reduce turnout among the sorts of Republicans who don't understand political realities, and jeopardize both Arnold and whatever proposition battles we have next year.
A lot of the problems is that this is a prosperous state where most are busy living their own lives and only those with a direct link to government employment are active in politics because their paychecks depend on the government.
This includes teachers, your run of the mill gov employees and also the police and firepeople.
I am dissappointed that some of the police and fire people were working agaisnt these propositions. They have been a part of the worst horrors in California.
I can't tell you how many bonds have been passed in the name of the police, fire and children.
Most often the refinance an already budgeted issue, get bonds to pay again for it and then the politicians raid the old funding back to the budget to grow their spending/power.
I am having a problem in many ways with the way things operate out here.
We need to repeat these propositions the next couple of elections and we will end up winning.
I'm hearing lots of complaints in the news by the left of how hard it was spending all this money against these propositions.
We need to break their bank. :-)
