France reacts to 'shockwave of riots'(Paris/France burns Live Thread Night #12)

French police made 395 arrests last night as riots intensified for the 11th consecutive night, with violence and fire engulfing towns from the North to the Mediterranean.

In the impoverished suburbs and satellite towns around Paris, where the unrest began on October 27, churches, schools and warehouses were set alight. At least 1,408 vehicles were destroyed, many more than on previous nights, and the random attacks have spread into the heart of the city.

In Grigny, south of the capital, a gang of around 200 youths are reported to have lured police into a housing estate before opening fire with hunting rifles. At least 30 officers were injured, two seriously with lead pellets in the legs and neck.

Riots broke out in beacons of disaffection across the country from Lille, on the border with Belgium, to Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. In Toulouse, police used tear gas to disperse a mob. Cars were set alight on the streets of Nantes, Orleans, Rennes and Rouen, and youths in St Etienne forced passengers off a bus before burning it. Churches were set ablaze in northern Lens and southern Sete.

In Strasbourg, youths stole a car and rammed it into a housing project, setting the vehicle and the building on fire. "We’ll stop when Sarkozy steps down," the defiant 17-year-old driver told an Associated Press reporter.

Police are calling for a night-time curfew in affected areas and some senior officers have demanded that troops are brought on to the streets.

Michel Gaudin, France's most senior police officer, said today: "We are witnessing a sort of shock wave that is spreading across the country."

I know this ain't PC of me but the best thing the French can do is to round up every Islamist and deport them out of the country. It might end up becoming that way here. I do see Islam much the same as we saw Communism during the Cold War. Come to think of it, it is a lot worse, at least most Communists are not suicidal maniacs who would sarifice themselves for there cause like the jihadists.

We will talk when the first "young innocent muslim youth" recruits of Al Qaeda or AL Jamma Al Islamyah make their terrorist strikes in France. Keep appeasing Vicomte, keep appeasing. You represent everything we despise about the French.

this is about social exclusion, not Islam.

How can you have social exclusion in France when you have maintained for months on these threads that there was no social exclusion in France?

Wasn't the reason terrorism wasn't crushed before 911 , because leaders were afraid that a strike would result?

Back in the 1990s, the French sneered at America for the Los Angeles riots. As the Chicago Sun-Times reported in 1992: "the consensus of French pundits is that something on the scale of the Los Angeles riots could not happen here, mainly because France is a more humane, less racist place with a much stronger commitment to social welfare programs." President Mitterrand, the Washington Post reported in 1992, blamed the riots on the "conservative society" that Presidents Reagan and Bush had created and said France is different because it "is the country where the level of social protection is the highest in the world."

Right your are NM. Communism is a 19th century invention. Islam has been polished to Allah's standards for 1,400 years. The question is...who is this Allah of Islam? Is he a good guy or not?

What's funny is..I have never wanted to go to France or Iraq in my life. I say screw em' and let them burn. France is getting what it deserves and I hope it breaks into the money districts because they still are kissing way too much ass and playing the weak role that we have all known and come to love over the centuries.

Normally I would agree with you but the Islamists pose a world threat and we do need to encourage the French to fight back although it seems to be a tall order as it looks now but if this goes on, there will be a final straw that will break the camel's back. If this does happen, maybe this is a blesisng in disguise if this causes the spark for the French to fight back.

"And you dismissed any one who suggested that riots were coming in the near future."

I don't remember doing that as such, but if I did, clearly I was wrong.

I may also be wrong about the outcome of these riots, and about the resolve of the government.

With a man dying and the police shot, things do not look as likely to end well today as they did yesterday.

I am particularly concerned about the prospect of Islamist radicals using heavy weapons which the police are beginning to speak about in order to radicalize the riots and provoke a harsh crackdown.

I have also noted in the past that Villepin has shown a surprising ability to learn. It could be that we are all deluded, and that this Islamist revolt that everyone on Free Republic has been screaming about for a week is actually what is happening.

If that is so, and violence accelerates, then Villepin may continue to evolve in his thinking and may order in the army. He has always dreamt he was Napoleon. If by ruthlessly suppressing disorderly Arabs by force he gains great popularity and stature, it will embolden him.

That is an interesting series of questions. I had not thought about it quite that way before.

I am not appeasing anybody!
I am explaining.
If I were King, I would have sent in the Army on the second day, and I would not treat property crime in the way that Civil and Common Law treat it. I agree with the fellow from Texas who thinks that it's ok to use deadly force to protect his property. But that is not the law, and I am not the King nor anybody else with any influence whatsoever over events.

So as it is, I can only spectate and hope none of my loved ones gets hurt.

CD, stop cutting so close to the bone. John Gibson had Larry Eagleburger on for an interview tonight and Larry said he had never given thought to the idea that Islamics were behind the riots in France.

It seems that first FR had to crush the MSM.

Now, it must crush the thinking of America (including those in the administration that believe that Islam is "benevolent and peaceful.")

Run for your lives...here come the Bushbots and Condibots.

I can't help it, and I may be wrong for this, but part of me enjoys watching the French get eaten by the Islamo-nuts. They are now reaping what they have sown.

Let this be a case study for the rest of the world.

'In Strasbourg, youths stole a car and rammed it into a housing project, setting the vehicle and the building on fire. "We’ll stop when Sarkozy steps down," the defiant 17-year-old driver told an Associated Press reporter.'

Why is that, because Sarkozy is 1/4 Jewish, because he is a strong leader? or both?

Is the insurrection an Islam thing, or poverty of the citizens issue?

How do you know what Villepin dreams...

And when was the last time a "diplomat" evolved into a "warrior."

Sorry dude, your naivete is showing. You are out of your league at FR. You aren't from France...but you might be from DU. It is painful to read your stuff. Do us a favor. Hit the road. Or at least be honest about yourself...it is liberating. Give it a try.

Come clean! We will accept you.

I don't live in Kali so all my info is a hazardous guess for legal and illegal items "there"........

I spose if the chance was that you'd disregard socialist "law" when up to your hips in trouble an AR Clone would be choice as ya can pick up regular mags off the streets or if ya move to a state with common sense gun laws, as if any really are, then the AR would be an OK choice. Rugged , reliable and if properly fed and cared for a heirloom for yer youngins......

Just an opinion as stated Kali firearms laws are mine fields that scare me.....
