My guess is the idiot had no clue as to the meaning of what he said.

No, if he knew the phrase, he knew the meaning. Reporters have a way with words - or they don't have the job...

Hindsight is 20/20. Had he thought of it he should have said, "If you care to rephrase your question I'd be happy to answer". In any case it was not McClellan who lost the round.

I just got off the phone with them, for the second time, since they disconnected me the first time. I gave the poor girl my very polite, but strongly worded thoughts on the matter, and told her that I am astounded that Roberts is still employed by their company this late in the day.

Please e-mail and call.

There is nothing better we can so than let our voice be heard.

For some reason Drudge used a British slang dictionary. But the term is very much in use in American slang, with no shag about it!

"However, if it's used in the UK, why should anyone be so familiar with it?"

I grew up in the 1950's, here in America, and I remember it from then.

Too bad he didn't say that to Rumsfeld. His reply would have been one for the ages.

Would the media show mercy to anybody, if things were reversed?

Don't fire him; instead, wrap that gaffe around his neck for awhile, and nickname him with it. "We turn now to John 'Sloppy Seconds, not the smart one on the Supreme Court' Roberts ... "

I guess my being female is why I didn't know. However, if it's used in the UK, why should anyone be so familiar with it?

It's used in the USA too, and AFAIK, the innocuous meaning, e.g. double dipper at the chip dip, is the uncommon one.

Had you heard or used the term before today?

I'm guessing he didn't know the original meaning. I agree.

He probably does know the original meaning, just like most of the rest of us do. But he probably didn't think much about it. I agree, though: this is no big deal.

It is not the job of the WH press secy to be confrontational. In fact it would be a big mistake for him to get mixed up in a verbal joust with reporters.

I agree with petitfour 100%. I'm not asking that the WH press secy be confrontational, but it is obvious to most everyone that the press corp runs rough shod over McClellan and he LETS them. It's gotten to be a sport amongst the elite media as to who can get bolder with their insulting disrespectful questions and remarks every time he holds a presser.

While McClellan seems to be a nice guy, he's not capable of handling these media @ssholes without that deer-in-the-headlights look. He's in way over his head and should be replaced.
