Gang or 14 leader, Sen. John McCain declined to offer unqualified support Monday morning for President Bush's new Supreme Court pick, Sam Alito - saying he wanted to wait for confirmation hearings before fully endorsing the conservative judge.
"I've always been favorably disposed towards a president's nominee," McCain told radio host Don Imus. "I voted for Justice Ginsburg and Justice Breyer because I think elections have consequences. I didn't share their judicial philosophy."
However, asked directly if he would support Alito, McCain told Imus: "Well, I'm favorably disposed but I'd like to see what happens in the hearings."
"That's why we have hearings," McCain reminded. "We go through all the examination of people's records. I hope that we can get this thing done and get it behind us."

As a non-McCain fan, that sounds like a fair thing to say.
He's such a wordsmith.
All seven people listening to the Imus in the Morning show called to confirm this is what McCain said...
Boy that's an understatement. I bet after seeing the president shot full of holes by his own side.... McNut really wants this thing over with.
Spoken like a true loser.
"I enthusiastically supported Breyer and Ginsburg, but this Alito guy will need watching. Oh, and don't forget to vote for me in 2008. Hey! Is that a camera over there? Gotta Go!"
What else would anyone expect the Maverick Senator from Arizona to say?
Maverick: a RINO guaranteed to take a position opposite the President on everything, and who sponsors left-wing legislation even more whacky than the Dems, e.g. CFR.
Wishy washy. Geez...is there anything this guy is wholeheartedly solidly FOR?
He may have been a hero during the war, but he's a milquetoast as a senator. Bleah!
Go ahead, McCain. Vote against Alito. I dare you.
I'm sure what McCain will in fact do will be to make just enough of these equivocal statements to keep intact his media reputation as a "courageous maverick" blah, blah, blah.
But McCain knows that if he voted against Alito he could forget any chance he might have to get the GOP presidential nomination. So at the end of the day I guarantee he'll vote for him.
One down, 54 to go.
"I voted for Justice Ginsburg and Justice Breyer because I think elections have consequences. I didn't share their judicial philosophy."
So why can't McStain apply the same principle to a President in his OWN party? At least he hasn't immediately come out against...RINO opportunist.
See #10. GMTA.
Is anyone surprised that McPain hesitates to endorse Alito? A clear first draft choice. A slam dunk for Republicans.
What he really means: "I can't believe that I'm going to have to vote for another ultraconservative Bush nominee - there must be some way out of this. I need to talk to my 13 buddies and see what we can do to nip this in the bud."
Senator John McCain (Media Party) was up early this morning to observe his windsock.
He'll vote to confirm. He wants to be president, and he knows he can't get elected running as an independent. And after seeing the past couple of weeks debacle, he doesn't want to be shot at by our side..... He's in the bag because he has ambition.
Well, then, this must be the Hillary Clinton position on it.
Because McCain is her 2008 running mate.
Yes, words from the anal orifice that led the hijacking of the U.S. Senate by the GANG OF FOURTEEN, a great American patriot, unbiased politician and anything but selfish...the great John McCain....
(sound of barf hitting bucket in background)...
