I think they said his mother is like 91 and the father was old too.
As a goombah myself, I am very happy this morning. Not that he is a fellow paisan, but that he is conservative, not afraid to stand alone, and has a proven track record we can all be proud to fight for.

Amen. Gender-smender. The Constitution wears neither pants or a skirt. It is just supposed to be upheld and obyed. So long as the people on the SC do that, it doesn't matter what gender they are.
Anyway, how much good has it done having the two women that HAVE been on the SC? o'conner is a gutless moderate at best and betrayed the principles of Reagan, and ginsberg is the most flaming liberal socialistic person to EVER server on the SC. So from where I sit, the two women who HAVE been on the SC haven't done the country any favors.

JUST A LITO BITLOL
This is exactly what conservatives wanted. Will the Democrats force the nuclear option? They're trying to figure that out right now.
Their first line of attack is to denounce his ideology. The second attack will be to find some personal dirt. Their third attempt will be an attempt to divide conservative support with something that could be construed as a liberal position by Alito.
The final option may be to filibuster and trust that the Republicans don't have the guts to break it.
This should be fun.

Who wrote that? 'Scooby Lewis'?????

Tony Snow said on FNC this morning that Specter will either support Alito, or the GOP caucus will kick him out as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Here is the relevant portion of the President's statement nominating John Roberts directly for Chief Justice of the United States (emphasis mine):
In his extraordinary career, Judge Roberts has argued 39 cases before the nation's Highest Court. When I nominated him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, he was confirmed by unanimous consent. Both those who've worked with him and those who have faced him in the courtroom speak with admiration of his striking ability as a lawyer and his natural gifts as a leader. Judge Roberts has earned the nation's confidence and I'm pleased to announce that I will nominate him to serve as the 17th chief justice of the Supreme Court.
The passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist leaves the center chair empty just four weeks left before the Supreme Court reconvenes. It is in the interest of the Court and the country to have a chief justice on the bench on the first full day of the fall term. The Senate is well along in the process of considering Judge Roberts' qualifications. They know his record and his fidelity to the law. I'm confident that the Senate can complete hearings and confirm him as chief justice within a month. As a result of my decision to nominate Judge Roberts to be chief justice, I also have the responsibility to submit a new nominee to follow Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. I will do so in a timely manner.
here's the url for the entire statement from whitehouse.gov. again, sorry I haven't learned how to create clickthrough links:

Alito is a good pick. I think the President should have gone really 'in your face' with either JRB or Luttig, but Alito wil do.

Yeah, "laugh snort laugh" is right. 8) The more that PFAW and moveon.org and others like them speak out the better we do next November. They ALWAYS leave a bad taste in the mouths of the majority of the American people. Amost makes you wonder if the GOP shouldn't maybe give some money to them, since the louder they get, the better we do in elections. Hmmmm. 8)

I dont have cable so I am stuck with the usual suspects stuck on stupid. I have to say I was rather impressed with Harry Smith of the today show, while all the rest used the word conservative or Scalito 10 times in a sentence, Harry and the reporters had a good balance. Thanks Harry.
I couldnt stomach the rest.

Going to back to 1833 for support? Just as weak as your lame defense of Meirs was.
Second, I am Catholic myself. Thus, your assertion is not only false, but one given with zero facts whatsoever.
No, I went back to 1797, the date when the greatest chief justice, John Marshall, wrote that statement. Are you suggesting that what one of the Founding Fathers and the greatest chief justice ever said in 1797 is not valid? You have been very rabid and biggoted about the mention of an Evangelical on the court. Naturally as a Catholic you would approve of 5+ Catholics on SCOTUS. There has not been one Evangelical nominated since 1930.
"The American population is entirely Christian, and with us Christianity and Religion are identified. It would be strange indeed, if with such a people, our institutions did not presuppose Christianity, and did not often refer to it, and exhibit relations with it." John Marshall, in a letter to Jasper Adams, May 9, 1833, JSAC, p. 139. Marshall was Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1801-1835.

There is some evidence that Alito would be more constitutionalist than would Luttig, but I of course know nothing about either man. I just hope that Senator Frist requires a "real" filibuster and does not cave in to the 41 senators who will object to an up-or-down vote.
