An Italian-American friend from NJ has asked me to find out if Alito has any Sicilian background. Can anyone help?

I don't know the answer to that one. If he does, then hopefully he can make Senate Democrats AN OFFER THEY CAN'T REFUSE!!!

It is amazing how many even on this forum don't understand this. Even "conservatives" on this forum are swallowing this crap that Alito is a replacement for O'Connor when he actually is replacing Rehnquist.

He's replacing O'Connor; Roberts replaced Rehnquist.

Those are the facts.

So why, then, are Robets and O'Connor BOTH on the bench at the same time if O'Connor was replaced by Roberts?

You're wrong. Alito is replacing O'Connor.

I mentioned to you earlier, Roberts was initially a replacement for O'Connor; then when Rennquist passed away, the President resubmitted Roberts to replace Rennquist as Chief Justice; had he not done so, Roberts would have to go through 2 confirmation hearings. Today, during the announcement, Alito, himself, said to the President, "thank you for nominating [me] to replace Justice O'Connor."

I think that Don'tTread means that Roberts would have been the replacement for O'Conner if Bush had not switched him to a replacement Rhenquist when he died.

Many feel that it was a mistake as Roberts is probably more conservative than O'Conner but probably less conservative than Rhenquist. Roberts would probably have been an easy confirmation even for O'Conner's seat.

Now, the democrats are now claiming that Roberts is a hardcore conservative so O'Conner's replacement should be more moderate. This is the case that they will try to get to the MSM to broadcast 24/7.

Some people don't seem to listen or else don't want to research things....

From the President's remarks nominating Judge Roberts to be the next CJ......

...The passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist leaves the center chair empty just four weeks left before the Supreme Court reconvenes. It is in the interest of the Court and the country to have a chief justice on the bench on the first full day of the fall term. The Senate is well along in the process of considering Judge Roberts' qualifications. They know his record and his fidelity to the law. I'm confident that the Senate can complete hearings and confirm him as chief justice within a month. As a result of my decision to nominate Judge Roberts to be chief justice, I also have the responsibility to submit a new nominee to follow Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. I will do so in a timely manner.....

This may be the most important fight of G.W. Bush's presidency and I hope he backs up Judge Alito.

The Supreme Court has been too long enamored of foreign socialism and atheism. We need someone to rightly rule that the husband and parents have rights as well as the responsibility to just pay for everything.Women should be forced to see the results of the "procedure" and given time to think of real consequences of abortion. We need a gov't that doesnt throw people out of their homes simply so others can get rich.We need judges who won't foolishly rule against the religous beliefs that seek to better man here and hereafter in favor of cults that want only to pull down and destroy.

The point I believe the original poster is trying to make is that we should be sure to appoint someone conservative to the court to replace O'Conner as Roberts was really a replacement for O'Conner (a moderate) but circumstances made it more expedient for him to replace Rhenquist (a conservative).

Technically you are right, but in the grand scheme of things Roberts was really a replacement for O'Conner and probably wouldn't have had any problem getting confirmed.

"This is "the peoples' pick"--the "true conservatives' pick",-- not Bush's pick."
Excellent point!

Your entire post is spot on.

I agree which is why I favored Edith Jones. She at least made it clear that although she may have had to follow precedent the precedent she was following was garbage.
