This is all likely to change when some or all of the 11 democrat Senators that are in VERY red states that Bush won BIG, are replaced by conservative Republicans over the years.

This is exactly what needs to happen, but I don't know how we get to there. The republican party is very loyal to it's incumbent senators. McCain should have had party funds pulled long ago, but they GOP is too scared that he would bolt to the democrats and lead a mass exodus.

The only way for this to happen is for the party to stay out of party primaries. From what I've read here on FR, the party is meddling an incredible amount in the upcoming Florida senatorial election.

Yes, I do. But given the president's mistake with Ms Miers, I'm grateful to the Kristols, Krauthammers, and Coulters for helping bring a better result. I'd bet Pres. Bush will feel that way, too, in time.

I hope you're right. That's way Reagan was elected and was the way the "Contract With America", by electing more Republicans, not evicting non-conservatives from the party.

As with the Roberts selection, the Alito vote will split the Democratic caucus right down the middle.

There will be no filibuster. Alito is going to be so impressive in the hearings that too many Democrats are going to vote for him to save their political asses at home. This includes, but is not limited to, Byrd, Nelson, Lincoln, Pryor, Carper, Nelson of Nebraska, and so on.

This has put Hillary in a hell of a bind, too... for both 2006 and 2008.

There are indeed more Protestants than Catholics in the U.S. But, the Catholic Church is also the largest single church or "denomination" in the U.S., since Protestants are split between many different churches (e.g., Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, etc.).

Yeah, I pointed that out in my post. The original poster's point, however, was that if you picked a person a random, a catholic would be the most likely result. That is not accurate.

And for what it's worth, the religion component is completely unimportant to me. I just don't want someone that believes that "God's laws" trump the "laws of men" when it comes to making judicial decisions.
