I respectfully disagree. I voted for GWB twice, and I would enthusiastically do it again. He has done a great job prosecuting the war on terror, and his tax cuts have spurred investment and growth which have kept us out of a deep recession. But, his nomination of Miers was an exercise in arrogance (for reasons that have been mentioned here countless times). I sincerely hope he will now nominate a true conservative and take the fight right to Schumer, Leahy, Kennedy and Biden, which is what he should have done in the first place.

If the nominee is like O'Connor or more liberal than her, I for damn sure don't want that nominee to be confirmed.

I'd rather Sandy stay than to replace her with someone younger and either as liberal or moreso.

It should have been done in the Senate. If the Repubs in the Senate did not want her they should have just voted her down simple as that. Then we could have started again from scratch the right way. This woman should not have gone thru the hell she went thru. Now it looks like we are eating our own and don't care at all who we hurt in the process.

She may not have been incompetent, but I don't think she would have been allowed to disprove that in the hearings, thanks to the broken process we now have.

Then again, she might have been.

I feel a little bad for her, as it did get pretty rough.

But them's the stakes.

If his prior record of predictions is any indicator of the future...

Well, let me put it this way, I'm very optimistic!

So what's your strategy for getting your dream candidate nominated AND confirmed? I guess that's my point.

Edith Jones, Diane Sykes; in short, a conservative who has gone through in the last 5 years without being filibustered.

"Bill Crystal just said he's SURE there will be indictments tomorrow...and more than one."

The usually erudite (K)rystol has been a big disappointment in analyzing this debaucle - surely, he knows more of the real story here; but you would not know it. ..listening to him.

I am not; however, disagreeing with his final interpretation re the indictments. . .

But I really feel sorry for the person who vetted Miers for the Court.

I think it was herself.
If she was picked because chuckie.S's brownshirts blackmailed a halfdozen more qualified jurists away form the SCOTUS, then she volunteered to illustrate that the SCOTUS is too important for "B" team nominees.

I give you justices Kennedy and Powell as exibit "A" of such 2nd-stringers.

(I think Owen withdrew her name from the selection process).

Someone close to her called Barbra Streisand on that rumor.

I agree. Everyone saying Miers was an unknown, IMHO, that wasn't a bad thing. We could get a conservative unknown through (and let me say a conservative unknown who Bush said was an originalist, I don't care if she was pro this or anti that in the past, Bush said she is now an originalist), we can't get a KNOWN conservative through, mainly because of the RINOs in Congress.

Conservatives did the dirty work that we should have forced the Dems to do. We should have made them question Miers, call James Dobson as a witness, etc. Instead, the "pie in the sky" conservatives believe that JRB or Luttig can make it through the nomination process...maybe we should change the name of that faction of the party to the Cleopatra coalition.

Yep, that's precisely what some people want. They want a fight. Doesn't matter who or what suffers in the process, let's just have a big party-destroying fight.

Let's just have a big Democrat party-destroying fight. Send them to follow the Whigs and let a pro-American 2nd party evolve to replace them. Much better than the Neville Chamberlin 'Rat appeasing strategy of the GOP RHINOs. Finish off the 'Rats. End the plague of liberalism.

The same crowd will be yelling for the next crucifixion if a strong Evangelical is nominated.

From comments I have seen from this site alone, I think the ones who claim their are the biggest christians, seem to have the harshest words. It has sure opened my eyes to the ones who think they have the most power. Shameful imho. I stood beside President Bush for years and enver changed. This will backfire on the ones who think they are most supreme

1) the "up or down" argument is >only< relevant to the Senate vote.

2) I agree there was some whining, but if that's most of what you heard, then you weren't listening very carefully.

Only the President has the authority to withdraw. Meiers asked him to do it last night.

The entire discussion here on FR was amazing in that if anyone voiced dissagreement with the Miers nomination, that person hated Miers, hated the president and was a lefty lurking on Free Republic.

You've got that ass backwards. Look at the poll on FR.

Everytime someone who even suggested that Miers be heard before the committee...we took a hammering. I avoided all but maybe 5 or 6 threads about her.
