What were the attacks on her character?

I specifically responded to people who specifically called her stupid. Would you like me to find them?

What do you have against Janice Brown?

And, would you prefer a strong (strict) constructionist on the court, or a "unified" party?

Nothing would unify the GOP base more than Bush nominating someone like Brown to the bench.

I have no idea how she would be on the court and neither did anyone else. That is the problem in a nutshell.

Bush did betray us, because because this nominee is TOTAL STEALTH. No on knows. If we have another Souter incident, our party will implode. Many of us our determined to NEVER allow this to happen again.

The President, asking us to support her based on his word alone, is NOT enough. In this area, IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH. That's why it must be a Luttig or someone, we, the people who got him elected can believe will be a conservative. We must have something other than "trust me" to operate on.

With regard to the RINOs. Fight the fight and fight it now. They blinked on Roberts, they'll blink on Luttig.

Can we both agree that when Miers stongest supporter in the Senate is Harry "screw America" Reid, the nominee has serious issues?

Oh really, last time I checked, Spector, Brownback, and Graham were on the Committee, not friends or family.

Well if members of the committee are already showing reservations in addition to your friends and family telling you that it is a bad idea to continue, then maybe the handwriting is on the wall.

She was denied nothing. If she wanted to continue, should would have received her hearing and an up/down vote. Sometimes it's just best to cut your losses.

question the relevance of religion in the modern world.

You want to look at only what's here and now. Fine. Go right ahead. Plenty of others are in your camp.

You may want to consider your soul, however. And to believe that God is some kind of mythical grandfather in the sky is denying what's really going to happen.

The laws belong to the people...?
Experts in Con Law aren't "people"? Scalia and Thomas aren't "people"?
So it is the "people" who should decide Supreme Court cases? So if the "people" decide that that the Constitution protects the right to abortion, then Roe should be upheld?

Leadership is also knowing when to admit that storming the mainland of Japan is not the best option.

"(I haven't engaged in personal attacks on her, and I've criticized the bizarre vitriol oozing from both sides during this sorry episode.)"

I know you haven't and neither has Laz. You two were examples of how civilized disagreement is done in contrast to the insane preemptive attacks around here.

The more I learned as facts came out, the more hopeful I was that she wouldn't be confirmed. It's the way she was treated on the basis of no evidence whatever for several weeks before any real facts came to light that gets me.

Coulter bashed Roberts too, but I didn't see QUITE as much vitriol against him in the beginning, so those who are saying they're in good company by citing Coulter's writings are just making excuses.

Well, I don't think she's the brightest bulb in the room either, but that in and of itself did not disqualify her in my view.

And, of all the right wing talking heads that weer opposed to her, I didn't hear any of them call her stupid.

I hope you're right, and we get someone on the Court just like you want.

This is not 1982. The MSM is not as powerful as they were. Even those who barely pay attention do not trust them completely anymore. There IS an alternative media now, and this country is MORE Conservative now. They just need to be continually educated to know it. Victory is NEVER assured, but it is NOT impossible either. Unless we give up.

Nothing in her resume indicated that she would. In fact, there were indications that she was not all that interested in those issues.

She's my personal pick as well. Smart, conservative, young (47) and has already been supported by two democrats on the judiciary committee - so they'd be hard pressed to explain why she was good enough for an appeals court position but not a supreme court position.

But I have to wonder: if someone were that grievously ill, what is he/she doing in the Senate?

Indeed. Considering Frist is a physician, they shouldn't worry about critical first aid anyway.

Again, I agree with you that they ought to go back to the old fashioned filibuster.

That is, restore the original Senate rule regarding the filibuster: It must be done around-the-clock, with no "time-outs" or breaks. The floor must be continually held 24/7 in order to keep the filibuster alive.

This is an example of the type of thread that I would have provided a substantive response to, a month ago. Now, I will say only that you misunderstand the ways the Senate rules work now, and have worked in the past.

How would you know? You're obviously not part of it.

As I've indicated, although I agree with most, if not all mainstream conservative issues, I disagree with the tactics and vitriol used against Ms. Miers. It was ugly, and no after-the-fact whitewashing is going to change what happened.
