I like the Santorum option, among others, because he is likely to lose next year. And he would be an outstanding USSC justice.

First rule in politics....YOU DO NOT ANGER YOUR BASE. If the base deserts you you have no party. The BIG TENT idea is good. BUT you do not pull in groups that are the direct opposite of your base. Period. The DEms lost because of a big tent party. When you try to make everyone happy you make no one happy. Do not anger the base.

and any liberal judge would GLADLY accept a nomination knowing he or she wouldn't be asked anything but "softball questions."

This is really negative stuff to have happening when we should already be targeting democratic senate seats in the mid-term elections.<<

Whats the point of having a majority when we sell out our beliefs to win? Thats the whole problem with all politicans, if they have they have the option to win, but they have to give up everything they believe in, they'd take it.

We fear the chances are strong for Alberto. Sure it will further enrage the base. But no one, no matter how much they disagree with his positions on certain issues, or his past affiliations, will be able to question his credentials.

Wrong. There is a long paper trail showing he is not a good jurist and is too liberal. Far more so than Miers. That's why he wasn't the nominee instead of Miers.

Beyond that, if Miers was withdrawn because the WH wouldn't surrender documents of her work as presidential counsel, it wouldn't work with Gonzalez either because he held that same job until last February.

There will be no Gonzalez nomination.

It is my understanding she withdrew, he didn't ask her to withdraw.

You don't think they talked it over before she withdrew? I won't venture to guess which of them broached the subject first, but I will venture to guess that they concurred that it was the best thing for all concerned.

It will only get worse, now that the ubers have the whip hand.

There's only one thing you can do about it. Start using rational arguments. It's the only way.

Mr. President, now is the time to appoint a Known Conservative.

Like Earl Warren, or Anthony Kennedy, or Harry Blackmun, or Warren Burger?

Upon reading her letter, you as a supporter should actually be proud. She has been exemplary in her performance as WH counsel. She is also protecting the executive branch from a senate Democrat PANTY RAID on documents. How about we agree that she is a very good WH counsel, and rally around a conservative appointee?

if the dems reject a nominee or two, they will look like the intolerant jerks they are

Intolerant?!!! Hahahahahahaha...there's been more intolerance demonstrated here on FR recently than I've seen in a long, long time. Unlike you, I don't pretend to speak for the American people. All I can say is that I'm totally repulsed by the intolerance of the ultra Right these days.

I don't suppose it occurs to any of you folks that the exact same outcome could have been accomplished without the vitriol exhibited by so many pundits and people on this board.

I agree wholeheartedly. While the discussion was completely legitimate and of utmost importance, the methods of disagreement were roughly akin to rioting in your own neighborhood and burning it down in protest. I want to make clear that all sides are responsible for this. As my mom always told me, it takes two to tango, or tangle or whatever that saying is.

We're all human, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but of all the disappointments surrounding the nominee, that was by far the biggest. And one that it will take me a while to get over because I honestly thought we were better than this.

IMHO we are now going to get someone we can all get behind because the President has seen the conservatives of the party are going to stick together when a conservative is nominated.

You watch; the next nominee won't be good enough for the Uber Conseravtives either.

"Whether you like this woman or not, she has taken an incredible amount of abuse."

I did not hear any personal abuse heaped upon her. I heard the President's base insist that he nominate someone who was clearly in the mold he promised. By public record (of which there wasn't one), Harriet Miers did not meet the President's own test.

We were rightfully worried about another Souter.

That didn't amount to personal or inaccurate attacks to my knowledge.
