.40 vs .45 LAW ENFORCEMENT USE

Posted on 10/26/2005 1:36:11 AM PDT by bramdawg

Going onto a local PD in los angeles area. Have heard stories both about .40's and .45's what is really the difference. I know comfort is important put I want to know if I will be safe with a .40 or if I should go with .45. I want the best gun for my job.

Since you asked for an opinion, Sig P226 or P229 (whichever fits best) chambered in .357 Sig.

I gots t' go now too, but poisonally, I hate it when things blow up into my face, especially when the stuff is on fire.

Although it IS cute when my little puppy ears stand up from the blast.

We did a test for local law enforcement production of a video training aid in our gun range one weekend. Using a crach dummy weighted @170 lbs. and with a kevlar vest we set up about 25 feet away. The 9mm basicly just knoked the dummy over. The .38 special basicly knoked over the dummy with a little more force. The .357 mag knoked the dummy over after pushing it back a foot or two with the arms reamining level. This was with standard factory ammo. The .45 auto picked the dummy up off the ground, the torso doubled up with the arms and legs flying forward as the dummy went airborne five feet or more before touching the ground again. That is the visual impact of imparting energy onto the target mass and the result of hitting with a heavy bullet with suffienct velocity. The .44 mag did the same as the .45 auto only this time the dummy went back about 7 to 8 feet and nearly did a sumersault backwords.

Trolls can start all the threads they want and it's the info folks post in response that the rest of us learn from...... sharing ideas from the responses vs the troll, real or not, who planted the seed !

Quite true!
I've even seen totally unrelated threads get hijacked and turned
into excellent gun threads. That used to be almost a sport!

"That's one bad rabbit. I usually settle with garden munchers with a 8 3/8th inch Smith model 48 .22 Mag with a 2 power Burris on it."

I opt for the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

CorBon bullets tried out a necked-down .45, calling it something like the .45/40 CorBon.

Its called the 400CorBon, and all it takes is a barrel (and sometimes a recoil spring) swap in a pistol chambered fro .45ACP. It uses the same magazines as well.

I custom built a 1911 a year or so ago just for the purpose of having a 400CorBon, but you can buy the conversion kits pretty inexpensively. The only thing you need to worry about is that some gun manufactures such as Kimber use inheirently inferior MIM (Metal Injection Molded) parts in some of their weapons and they may not be able to stand up to "full house" 400CorBon loads. Its best to substitute forged pieces for those anyway.

A double stack .40 mag is easier to fit into a slim grip.

I wonder if anyone ever designed a pistol/magazine which was single-stacked at the top but double-stacked further down? I would imagine there would be some engineering challenges, and it might not be possible to make the pistols/magazines ambidextrous, but otherwise I would think that might be a useful compromose between single and double stacks.

"You have the best tag line I have seen lately."

Thanks, It came to me while the bloated senior senator from Massachusetts was bloviating and some stupid network had the bad taste to televise it. I would be honored if you and others would repeat the sentiment. After all, how many other people languish in CA prisons 37 years after their first offense? I smell Hyannisport influence.
