TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Police used tear gas to break up a rock-throwing crowd that had gathered to protest a planned march Saturday by the National Socialist Movement.
At least two dozen members of a Roanoke, Va.-based group that calls itself "America's Nazi Party" had gathered at Wilson Park just before noon and were to march under police protection.

I think this event has drawn some attention to some neighborhoods "in transition" - that I haven't really thought about. Some tough demographics at work. Couple this with aging boomer population who cannot escape conditions. Not a good combination.
I did watch some of the news that covered the riot. It is a little difficult to tell the good guys from the bad guys, isn't it? One group is totally racist and the other is completely lawless.
The racist Farakhan gets to have marches too. If you want to see a site that compares with the nazis and KKK check out the nation of islam site. It's full of hate and racism.
I agree totally about the mob mentality and was implying no sympathy for the looters/vandals whatsoever. I was speaking generally about the common link between neo-nazis and neo-communists.

Throughout history, there have been many leaders who have espoused atrocious ideas and followed through with horrendous actions. Most of them were highly intelligent, but that doesn't mean they didn't have a screw loose somewhere.
Those who follow White carry their anger to extreme thoughts. But, on a similar note, we hear the same coming from black leadership in this country who understand that the only way for them to maintain personal power is to keep the race card alive. So too, do leaders of Islam. If they stop with the lies and rhetoric, they will lose the anger of their followers, which is the only thing that keeps Islam alive and the only thing that gives the imams power.

Free speech, especially for this type of racist group, is really important, because it allows their ideas to be held up to the light of day where the rest of us can see how stupid they are. If we don't allow them to speak, then they become a martyr of sorts.

You misquoted me, I said '5'5 but that's not important. There is no height requirement for police officers. There are plenty of male officers in CA that are of the stature I cited. You are set in your way of thinking..... so any further discussion would be rather pointless and I'm ready to move on.
Ironically, "The Blade" is the name of the Gay newspaper in NYC.
It used to be the Toledo Blade as Toledo Spain was a "sister" city. But the paper got into a spat with the city and removed "Toledo" from it's name.

You made a very good point here, worth repeating, especially the aging population who can not 'escape'. Very difficult and to be sure yesterday must have been like hell on earth for them. I stayed over in that neighborhood several times some years ago and it was tense (as in not a very secure feeling) at that time.
I saw the condescention and think it's very safe to say that VBWC and others are pointing out an obvious fact about "rioters themselves are responsible for losing control of themselves....".
Some FReepers see more than the obvious called into play and are trying to untangle the little web the Nazis weaved when they practiced to deceive.

There are some reports that the other groups with the Nazis were handing eggs to agitated blacks. Who knows what all happened behind the scenes and in the days leading up to this. Again, not excusing the rioters but darn sure not excusing the Nazis, etc.

I just want to point out reports the Nazis were NOT given a permit. Don't know if it's true or not, but what I understand is that they were not, they were told Toledo did not want to obstruct traffic and a permit was denied, however Toledo did tell them they were 'permitted' (as in permission) to walk on sidewalks (just like anyone else).
