TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Police used tear gas to break up a rock-throwing crowd that had gathered to protest a planned march Saturday by the National Socialist Movement.
At least two dozen members of a Roanoke, Va.-based group that calls itself "America's Nazi Party" had gathered at Wilson Park just before noon and were to march under police protection.

At least 816 people were crushed to death or drowned in a stampede on a Baghdad bridge triggered by fears a suicide bomber was among vast crowds of Shiite pilgrims massed for a religious ceremony.
Who's to blame, who's to blame. Those pilgrims, and only them, that's who.
Have I come around to your way of thinking?
The leader of the National Socialist Movement's chapter in Roanoke, Va., said the rally won't sway the movement's support base.
"We stated repeatedly ... that the local blacks and their political leaders are a bunch of loudmouthed cowards, and that we expect that, when confronted with their criminal behavior by strong and organized white people, would run, hide, and whine. And it appears that is exactly what is happening," Bill White said in a statement.
A white resident's complaints to police about gang violence in the neighborhood got the movement interested in Toledo, White said.
The neighbor, Thomas Szych, has said he did not solicit the group's support, and he doesn't expect its march will alleviate the racial tensions.
Please don't put words in my mouth.
If you don't understand what it is I am saying, please ask for clarification, thank you.
You are correct, of course.
It will be interesting to listen to the media follow-ups on this incident. Already, FNC ceems to have chosen sides. And we already know what the 3 stooges will say.
Don't most Nazi movements have small members?
You're clueless. He never wrote a letter. He pulled a gun on his neighbor and her children.
Don't address me again. And this is a formal request. According to FR rules, I can hit the abuse button if you continue.
Wow, they went there to confront them with their criminal behavior......sounds like a vigilantes to me. Just think they went there to cause trouble and bring attention to themselves. Free Speech....where they going to call them loud mouth cowards?
Instigation, Incite to riot, all in a day's work.
As we all do. No one is saying otherwise.
Radical political groups have had their right to free speech protected by U.S. Supreme Court decisions since around the end of WWI.
It's better for society, I think, to treat kook groups like the "Nazis," as the strange folks they are. They should be encouraged to change their views, mocked with some laughter, and confronted in a civilized way. This National Socialist Movement is unlikely to go anywhere because it is really too laughable. Someone donning a swastika armband isn't telling us very much other than that they are very much out of the mainstream and possibly mentally unbalanced. They might just get a perverse kick out of tweaking society's nose; I don't think any of us know. I think you're confusing the Nazis of WWII with these oddballs.
There are dangerous "right-wing" maniacs like Tom Metzger whom I would consider a much more serious threat than these clowns. They seem more into the Nazi 'fetish" than anything else.
my argument is not with you.
That analogy is not applicable to the situtation in Toledo.
Oh - thank you for the wide berth - you are so kind to us newbies.
Please remember to explain it all to me when you figure it out. How long does it usually take to figure out who is responsible for throwing large stones at rescue vehicles? Did they think it was self defence?
I can't wait for the part where you explain how one person controls another's actions. Because, in the end, that is what any excuse for the rioters is about. Who is responsible for the person's actions.
Now dear! It was just to be a "peaceful protest".
Instigation, Incite to riot, all in a day's work.
Unfortunately, it worked.
"Nazism is the preaching of genocide. Freedom of speech should not apply to people who think it's OK to kill off everyone that's not like them."............OK now when do we ban Islam in the USA?
Another straw man for October porches.
Please identify the imminent threat posed by the few Nazis and Mr Szych to the rioters.
Who rioted for hours.
No comparison.
I happen to agree with some of Mr. Rationa's statements. For instance, the fact that this group came to town was not a reason to riot. That being said, no one here is attempting to remove responsibility from any group or individual involved.
"The fault and responsibility for the riot rest solely with the rioters"..........Great now tell it to the Black mayor of Toledo who blamed the Nazis { They knew this would happen}..So who are the racists here?
I don't think I'd be more comfortable in Europe, thank you. Speech is protected until it harms, darlin'.
Sorry, wrong. If that were true, those who threaten violence against speech they don't like, could shut down anyone.
The First Amendment says what it says, deal with it. The Nazis had a legal permit to march. They have done nothing illegal. The only people who should be prosecuted are those committing actual crimes: the rioters, and maybe some of the leftists who egged them on and advocated/encouraged/provoked violence. If the Nazis were advocating violence and making specific threats, the local prosecutors would be all over them. The fact is, the nazis haven't done anything wrong and the mere threat of violence against them, just because violent people don't like them, cannot be used as legal justification to silence them.
It's put up or shut up time: show where the nazis advocated actual violence against actual people (not vague theoretical palaver) and you have a case, and the federal, state and local prosecutors can prosecute them. Until then, you have no case. End of story.
qoute"I never thought I'd see an American give Nazis a right to free speech. I sure didn't think I'd see it here at Free Republic."
No American can "give" a right to another. Those rights are inherant at birth and endowed by the creator. No one grants or gives rights to another. We all have the same rights. All of us.
Free speech IS offensive speech, and protected by law.Restricting anothers' right to speak offensively because it is presumed to cause a violent offensive reaction in others is illegal and unconstitutional.
The people in that neighborhood who had been victimised by crime for years went to the cops and got no protection, they didnt belong to the correct victim group. They reached out to someone willing to make a public statement about it.Today we see the result.
Good question, although Mr. Rational didn't mention anything about racism in that post. He simply said rioters were responsible for the riot.
