White House warns holdouts

White House officials have a message for conservative Republican senators who have expressed doubt about supporting Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers.

The West Wing types argue that she will turn out to be just as conservative as President Bush says she is, and voting against her would be an embarrassment over the long term. This message is intended for holdouts including Sam Brownback of Kansas, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"If Miers is confirmed and she winds up being what the president says she is, Republican senators who voted against her will look quite foolish," says a GOP insider. This could cause a backlash against these legislators from conservative Bush supporters at the grass roots.

Either you believe both Bush & Miers, or you don't.

If you don't believe them, then you are calling them liars
something their Christian faith asks them to avoid.

Well, I guess we can just seat her then. That was easy.

The fact that you want to have hearings means you think they might be liars, how's them apples?

On the legal end, meanwhile, do you think George Bush finds both Alberto Gonzales and Priscilla Owen to " ... not legislate from the bench but strictly interpret the [law] ..."? Both of those names appear on his "short lists." Because, in my analysis, it is not possible for both of them to be "strictly interpreting legislative intent" when the two of them came out on opposites of the same case, and the case turned on interpretation (or application) of the words in the statute book.

And when I think about it, my how far we have drifed from original intent. "Should a judge somehow set social policy from the bench" used be an easy question, agreed answer by all. But that is the question we are fighting over. In the dark. Wearing straightjackets.

BTTT!

The ride is, in it's special way ... fun.

I would be more inclined to say that it is interesting. As in the Chinese proverb, "May you live in interesting times."

I'm not being at all misleading and it is NEVER my intention to mislead but to be truthful.

I heard 50% of Americans believe the President should be impeached. I did not hear the question that was asked.

Close to 50% of Americans believe GW lied about Iraq, according to other polls I have read.

The president most certainly doesn't want to lose Republicans, or a Republican majority in the midterm election. Democrats are itching to impeach him and if we lose the Republican majority, guess what??? He may well be impeached and with the approval of Americans. It is something about which he should be ever mindful. I don't think any of us want to see that happen.

I see you're still having some problems here AF. Let's try to simply things a little bit for you:

1. Criticizing the war and the troops is one subject.
2. Criticizing a SCOTUS nomination is a completely different subject.

You just want to conflate and confuse the two unrelated subjects so you can vilify people who disagree with the President, as traitors. You're acting like some nutty left-wing caricature of a conservative, denouncing all debate as treason. I wish you a better grip.

This isn't about reservations. This is about an evil attack on Harriet Miers by evil people.

Evil attack? Get a grip.

...during Dinkins' tenure ?

I'm thinking of earlier than that...but it could have happened since. I left the state long ago...would love to go back, but can't handle the taxes and laws.

But wait! Don't you know they were the only ones hitting the pavement, knocking on doors, handing out fliers.

Just them. The rest of us just went along for the ride.

As for this whole issue. In my life I have never seen a bunch of elitist snobs pitch such snot blowing, vain popping fit over a simple nomination coming from within their own party. All anyone is asking is that Miers get her day in committee. Nothing else.

Yet somehow Miers has been morphed into a judicial Antichrist whose nomination will surely signal the second coming and the end of days.

How we got here from there I will never know.

I heard Ann Coulter today. She has become a raving lunatic who managed once again to say that we do not know enough about Miers but do know enough about her. This she followed with when asked by Sean Hannity if Miers turns out to be a Scalia or Thomas will she be happy. Her response is that it will never happen. Now that is the logic of someone I want running the party (Roll eyes) which in reflection seems to be trying to do exactly that.

So basically I am at the point of tossing up my hands and saying screw it. The lunatics have now taken over.

They claim that their work to elect Republicans and Conservative somehow outweighs the rest of ours.

We are called "Bush Bots" for trusting a man we worked to get elected to make this nomination and just ask that it makes it to committee.

Yet it seems to me its is they who are marching Zombie like following the direction of a few pundits who happen to have done what? Written a book and appeared on T.V..

Well, ain't that a hoot!

No, it's evil attack. You will be surprised how many of the base understand this when it's all over. The pundits and self appointed leaders of the movement can go get real jobs (and hopefully real marriages).

I believe she's entitled to a hearing. Are you willing to go on record that, following a hearing, Republican Senators are entitled to vote "Nay" without being labeled scum, traitors, and so forth.

All you're asking is her day in comittee. Right?

Then again, with the spending going on now, with no veto's, how can a Dem. Senate be any worse.

Apparently you haven't ever been around when the dems controlled the senate. Get ready to lose the rest of your rights if you let that happen.

As far as letting an idiot like clinton into the wh again, that will be the last straw and we will never see another conservative in office. The next two elections are for all the marbles and if you small minded pr**ks want to act like spoiled children because you didn't get your way and not vote or vote third party then you will be the ones to rue the day, not the republican party politicians but the constituents.

DemscCan't get any worse? How the hell do you think we lost all these rights to start with?

No matter how bad this nomination is, it is not worth sitting on your hands and letting the Dems get control again. This happens every so many years. The conservatives get angry and act like 2 year olds and the dems get back into power. Well go to it, I will be dead soon but most of you will have to live with it, and I hope you enjoy living in Communist America for thats where you will be.

Miers is ONE nominee. You guys are blowing this all out of proportion. The ones who already hated Bush are using it to advance their anti-Bush agenda, the ones who are easily led are following right along and the rest of you are simply being stubborn because "Bush didn't nominate who YOU wanted." Well boo f**king hoo.

Get over it and start worrying about what you are doing to the base. It isn't the Bushbots it is the died in the wool conservatives that are ruining any chance of ever getting real conservatives into office.

Go back and read your posts, all of you. I have never seen such a bunch of whiny children. This is the same group that was so sure of themselves last year, just a few weeks ago. Now look at you Miers and anti-Miers alike, acting like 3 year olds. You all, both sides, make me sick.

As a conservative Republican, President Bush never ceases to disappoint me.

Disappointed because he beat Algore and Kerry?

I get that you don't trust Bush. If you did, you would entrust him with making an intelligent decision regarding the next jurist. Lie after lie after lie - says you.

You just have a problem with her pedigree and can't admit it. All that Bush promised was a Constructionist.

I'm undecided about this nominee. I hope to learn more during the confirmation hearings, which I believe she's entitled to.

I'm exactly where you are. So, there's no reason to trash Bush or Miers over this nomination. I recognize there are people who have such shallow lives that a SC choice sends them to the Xanax bottle, but I never knew there were so many.
