On the heels of Federalist Society staffers appearing in the New York Times and Washington Times on Wednesday, a Federalist Society member tells ABC News the following: (this Thursday morning)
'The Federalist Society staffers are ready to lauch a coup. They have started whispering awful things about Harriet Miers.' The staffers are now just reaching the point of wanting to talk on background.' (to the mainstream media about the nominee)
'The whispers started on Monday, but have revved up...They are willing to talk.'
Federalist Society staffers don't get to vote on the nomination of course, but if the whispers get louder from key Administration allies on judical nominations, perhaps some Senators may listen.
That could be ominous.

"Harriet Miers has a solid record as a hard-working lawyer."
No one says otherwise. But read the Texas Bar articles and you'll get the impression she is as sharp as a butterknife. Nothing wrong with butterknives, they just weren't meant to cut steak.
This nomination is dead if they note 'nay' 8-10 in committee, and we get a new nominee.
I normaly enjoy listening as well, and have sense she was pickup here in L.A. I guess I just want to wait for the hearings. I have come to expect this kind of caterwalling from the Left. I just have a feeling this will come to a bad end. I guess the big thing is you have to know when to pick a fight, and I don't think this is it.
I totally agree that the wheels could come off the Miers cart during the confirmation hearings. Anything might happen. I could end up being as opposed to her as some others. But for now I remain comfortable in supporting her and the President.
They only have to cut the mustard as Supreme Court Justices, rarely steak.
As to his credentials, he's just another conservative (whether you think he's faux or not) pundit who thinks Miers is not qualified.
Just heard Laura Ingraham on the radio reference his article. Laura's another one of those "sexist, elitist" credentialed pundits who has a problem with this nomination.
The nomination process is not a 'rubber stamp' process to confirm a potential justice.
That vote will come after she has had her chance to be heard.
We all know what happens to people who attempt to "kill the King" and fail. Sounds like the Federalist Society is crossing the Rubicon. For their own good, they'd better know what they're doing.
Over 70% on the FR poll are already unsure about this nominee...
The sad part of your thought process is the fact that you forget history. Do you think any of the Republican Presidents thought they were nominating closet liberals at the time they made the choice? These Administrations did the same exhaustive studies for possible candidates as this Administration has done, so your confidence in this matter is suspect unless you have information that would show otherwise. We have struggled 25 years so that George Bush can nominate a light weight who's law firm of which she is a partner, contributed $1,000.00 to the Hildabeast in 2000. Warms your cockles I imagine that Reid, Leahy, Feinstein and our own conservative Arlen Spectre (Dr. Evil) are singing her praises while at the same time the WH says that anyone who questions this pick is either sexist or elitist.
"They only have to cut the mustard as Supreme Court Justices, rarely steak."
We'll see if she cuts the mustard, or cuts the cheese.
With the 'Gang of 14' roaming around to cause trouble, they can tell POTUS that they simply don't have the votes for Janice Rogers Brown/Priscilla Owen, without the nuclear option.
Please think first before you believe a M$M disinformation campaign. Second, Federalist Society members are American citizens and have a right to their opinions, don't they. Of course they are also responsibile for their actions, too. The plain facts are that Bush is human and has made a few mistakes - as we all do. In general he has done a better than average job - he got most of the big issues right. Miers is clearly NOT the best available candidate for the job (IMO). Flame on.
How about the remaining 3 year's of W's term? There's a very real possibility that 2 more vacancies on the Court may open up, not to mention the dozens of other federal judgeships surely requiring appointments. They are clearly risking much.
That we will.
Is Generalissimo Francisco Franco Still Dead?
Opponents of Miers note that they STILL oppose her today, thus showing that Miers is increasingly bad as a pick. "Each day that we learn nothing new is another nail in the coffin for her nomination, and each day we make the same complaint more loudly and often, proving that she surely must go".
"When we first complained two weeks ago, we could be ignored, but now that we are still complaining about the same things two weeks later, well, you have to sit up and take notice -- we are very dedicated in our beliefs about not knowing anything about this pick".
If these people keep not supporting Miers, it is almost assuredly the case that her nomination will be doomed, not by their numbers, but by the shear number of days they were able to maintain their lack of support.
