Secretary of State Rice visited with Pakistani and Afghani leaders and then arrived at Chaklala Air Base in Rawalpindi.

Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld is attending the U.S. and Central America Ministers Conference on Security and Economic Opportunity in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Thanks for your responses. Most of the people I talk to - Bush supporters and conservatives - are doing the wait and see approach. However, most do feel somewhat demoralized in that this was "our chance."

I will go on record saying that I don't think Roe v. Wade should be overturned so I'm not concerned about that. What bothers me are decisions like Kelo (sp?) and CFR. I don't want another Sandra Day O'Connor who has moments of clarity (she wrote the dissent opinion on Kelo) but often bends to the political winds (CFR, the Michigan affirmative action case).

I am a stallwort Bush supporter but I don't like the profigate spending, No Child Left Behind, his signing the CFR, etc. I totally support him on the tax cuts and WOT...I can see why conservatives are alarmed because they have put up with the negatives rationalizing that it's the SCOTUS that makes the difference and we get an unknown...it's a pickle and I don't think it needed to be.

I'll hold judgement until the hearings. W has a way of handling these things and I just have to hold my fire and keep the faith.

Yes I agree there is plus and minuses of both systems. The one as a voter that I think would confuse me is that a lot of your Congressmen and Senators seem to take pride in having an independent voting record which often is not in tune with their party. If I was voting for this person I would want them to vote according to the party I belong to and what their principles and manifesto is not according to how they feel on any given day.

Having said that I realise that there are certain issues that someone should not have to vote on party lines such as moral ones eg abortion and death penalty (in the UK the individual MP would always be given this as a free vote) but on other issues such as the economy, education, taxation etc the fact that they are a member of my party is why I would have voted for them in order that they would uphold and help implement my party's views.

I found it interesting your comment re our Speaker I have never heard it put like that before so I did a bit of digging as I always think of the Speaker as a referee or a parent marshaling naughty children. Here is the official definition from our Parliamentary website. Thanks for getting me thinking of how the system actually works.
