FOXNEWS Poll: Rice, Giuliani, McCain look strong.
Fox News Poll | 10/5/05

Posted on 10/05/2005 8:39:35 PM PDT by WatchYourself

Interesting Poll by FOXNews on 2008 elections and such, especially regarding Condoleezza Rice.

Clinton still clear frontrunner for Dem nomination with 44% Support from Party

Giuliani still in lead with 26%, with McCain at 23% and Rice at 18%. Allen barely coming in at 2% despite recent pushes by some activists.

In head to head match-ups, Giuliana leads Clinton by double digits, 50-39, wile taking 20% of DEMs and losing just 8% of REPS to Clinton and a 16 point advantage with INDs.

McCain has virtually the same numbers as Giuliani. (49-38)

But Condoleezza Rice has the strongest support from Republicans, garnering an 84% Definite vote from the party (compared to 82% and 81% respectively for Giuliani and McCain). But she trails Clinton because she is also the most heavily opposed Republican by Democrats. She gains just 10% of the DEM vote (compared to over 20% for Giuliani and McCain). She also loses the IND vote to Clinton, thus leaving her currently trailing 46-43%.

According to this poll, no other Democrat can take out any of the top 3 Republicans, as Gore, Kerry, and Edwards all lose hypothetical match-ups to Rice, Giuliani, and McCain.

Also:

Not surprisingly, Giuliani was rated as the most "Strong and Decisive Leader" Garnering a 65% Yes to 20% No.

He was trailed by McCain (56-23%), Rice (55-31%), Bush (51-46%) and Hillary (51-42%).

I'd be curious to see what percentages of Americans could identify that George Allen is even a politican. I'd be shocked it it was over 10%.

I want Tom Tancredo, or someone like him.

I think the borders issue will resonate with people across the aisles. Maybe he's not likeable enough?

Man, though, a social/fiscal conservative who will get crap done and isn't afraid to stick out his neck...

In short supply, aren't they?

Check out the message I posted on that link in #19. If "the borders issue" resonates with people across the aisles in 2008, Rudy is going to get his head handed to him. An arrogant, liberal pr!ck who proudly flaunted Federal immigration laws while he was mayor of New York has doesn't do anybody a favor by even calling himself a Republican, let alone running for a White House nomination on the GOP ticket.

A poll this early is based almost entirely on name recognition and doesn't tell us very much.

Correct! Not even worth taking.

McCain may do well in a National poll, but he will never get the nomination.

Yeah, I like listening to Guliani. I like watching Guliani. He's dynamic, articulate, succinct, and powerful.

But ideologically, well, we differ.

I trust him more than McCain, but that's not saying much. Time will tell.

I lean towards Condi right now.
But I worry because generally Americans elect Governors in recent history. None of these folks are Governors.

McCain? I don't know how he got those numbers in a poll, cause I don't know a single republican that would vote for him!

Oh, or was that poll for National Dog Catcher?

McCain can drop his pants, bend over and tute America the Beautiful from his rear if he wants to, but NO WAY will he get any part of the Republican nomination when the votes come in.

I respect his sufferings and sacrifices as a soldier and prisoner of war, but he IMO does more to hinder the conservative movement than help it.

No way McCain.

I like Rudy, but better for the Senate of NY and not the Presidential race please.

The only Republicans mentioned in the poll who I can say that I would definitely vote for are Rice and Allen, preferably Allen. If Giuliani is nominated I won't bother to vote. If it's McCain I would have to think long and hard before I decided whether to vote or not, and it would probably depend on who the Democrats run.

McCain has gone against 2nd Amendment rights in the last few years, but AFAIK he still claims to be pro-life. I don't believe he's seriously opposed to abortion on moral grounds, but at least he isn't overtly pro-abort like Giuliani.

If I am forced to vote for McCain just to keep Hildybeast out of the White House I'll hold my nose and do it. But if I do I don't think I could ever look myself in the eye in a mirror again. It will be a crying shame if 2008 has to come down to a choice between the lesser of two evils.

How much of that do you figure was due to the name recognition of his father?

I doubt very many people could tell you much about George W Bush in October 1997.

Its also interesting to note that poll happened before the media built John McCain, and he was not even mentioned as a potention 2000 candidate when people like Lamar Alexander and Whitman were.

As I have said before on this site I will vote for Hillary before I vote for McCain. Better an enemy that everyone recognizes as such than one who is able to delude some.

This is actually quite good for us. Rice basically ties Hillary and has stronger power numbers without being one of the "declared" candidates. Now consider how well she would do with an active campaign modeled on the BC'04 effort. She would definitely pump up her Dem numbers. I can't see he doing below 17-20% among black voters, simply because she's so likeable personally. I also believe she would take independents and score monster numbers among men.

Giuliani and McCain have their own demons. The thought of Rudy appointing SCOTUS justices must give one pause, especially in light of the Miers fiasco. And don't get me started on McCain.

Rice is positioned very well here. After all, it's the autumn of 2005. The last place you want to be relative to 2008 is in the lead.

Be Seeing You,

Chris
