The Senate defied the White House yesterday and voted to set new limits on interrogating detainees in Iraq and elsewhere, underscoring Congress's growing concerns about reports of abuse of suspected terrorists and others in military custody.
Forty-six Republicans joined 43 Democrats and one independent in voting to define and limit interrogation techniques that U.S. troops may use against terrorism suspects, the latest sign that alarm over treatment of prisoners in the Middle East and at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is widespread in both parties. The White House had fought to prevent the restrictions, with Vice President Cheney visiting key Republicans in July and a spokesman yesterday repeating President Bush's threat to veto the larger bill that the language is now attached to -- a $440 billion military spending measure.
But last night, 89 senators sided with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who led the fight for the interrogation restrictions.

Just what are the restrictions placed in the bill?
I doubt it is THAT bad (but then again, maybe it is).
"That's about like the Local carpenter's union voting to tell the town Heart Surgeon what medical procedures he is to use."
LOL!
Funny, but you're right. I liked it better when congress was running baseball. ;)
It's WORSE!
THE ACTUAL TEXT, GIVING THE TERRORIST DETAINEES FULL RIGHTS AND PROTECTION OF THE US CONSTITUTION ANYWHERE, EVEN OUTSIDE THE US AND CREATING US LAW BASED ON THE UN.

Maybe with Roberts on SCOTUS they will B*SLAP the Senate back into reality.
This hasn't passed in the House yet, So hopefully they will stop this nonsense
Considering the overwhelming majority, with which it passed the Senate I am worried -- the House may go off the deep end too and pass this.
Who is that Sheriff in Texas who puts the prisoners in tents without air conditioning and makes them wear pink clothes? Now that is my idea of what to do with prisoners.
holy $*$*

I remember seeing a TV special on that -- but we couldn't do that with the terrorists, that would be "cruel and torture" and anyone who did it, would be prosecuted under this new law, if it passes the House too.
Start petitioning the House tonight.
Aside from the House there is only one other avenue to stop this because even a VETO couldn't prevent it. And that is through...the Courts. Not exactly reassuring. This needs to be stopped in the House now.
hell, start flooding Senate offices with outrage..except for the nine that deserve praise.
Put the senate in Gitmo.
The bill is veto-proof. They only need 60 votes to override the veto, and this was passed with 90!!!
It's an outrage.
Exactly -- the HOUSE is our only hope.
The House better not allow this in as part of the negotiation with the Senate.
From another article:
"The House-approved version of it does not include the detainee provisions. It is unclear how much support the measure has in the GOP-run House.
Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee on defense, is supporting McCains legislation. Murtha could prove a powerful ally when House and Senate negotiators meet to reconcile differences in their bills."
