Senate Supports Interrogation Limits (90-9 vote to protect terrorist detainees)
Washington Post ^ | Oct. 6, 2005 | Charles Babington and Shailagh Murray

The Senate defied the White House yesterday and voted to set new limits on interrogating detainees in Iraq and elsewhere, underscoring Congress's growing concerns about reports of abuse of suspected terrorists and others in military custody.

Forty-six Republicans joined 43 Democrats and one independent in voting to define and limit interrogation techniques that U.S. troops may use against terrorism suspects, the latest sign that alarm over treatment of prisoners in the Middle East and at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is widespread in both parties. The White House had fought to prevent the restrictions, with Vice President Cheney visiting key Republicans in July and a spokesman yesterday repeating President Bush's threat to veto the larger bill that the language is now attached to -- a $440 billion military spending measure.

But last night, 89 senators sided with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who led the fight for the interrogation restrictions.

Just what are the restrictions placed in the bill?

I doubt it is THAT bad (but then again, maybe it is).

"That's about like the Local carpenter's union voting to tell the town Heart Surgeon what medical procedures he is to use."

LOL!

Funny, but you're right. I liked it better when congress was running baseball. ;)

It's WORSE!

THE ACTUAL TEXT, GIVING THE TERRORIST DETAINEES FULL RIGHTS AND PROTECTION OF THE US CONSTITUTION ANYWHERE, EVEN OUTSIDE THE US AND CREATING US LAW BASED ON THE UN.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?r109:1:./temp/~r109H252jM:e911694:

(a) In General.--"No individual in the custody or under the physical control of the United States Government, regardless of nationality or physical location, shall be subject to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.

(b) Construction.--Nothing in this section shall be construed to impose any geographical limitation on the applicability of the prohibition against cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment under this section.

(c) Limitation on Supersedure.--The provisions of this section shall not be superseded, except by a provision of law enacted after the date of the enactment of this Act which specifically repeals, modifies, or supersedes the provisions of this section.

(d) Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment Defined.--In this section, the term ``cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment'' means the cruel, unusual, and inhumane treatment or punishment prohibited by the Fifth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States, as defined in the United States Reservations, Declarations and Understandings to the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment done at New York, December 10, 1984. A "WTF?!!!!" ping

Brings to mind an old joke about a bus full of lawyers going over a cliff with one empty seat (i.e. a cryin' shame). Seems we now need a bus for those 90 so-called U.S. Senators.

These "people" clearly have forgotten what those b@$t@rd terrorists have done to humanity. The only thing on their mind is appeasement to these low-life scum.

Do you think for a freakin' minute they showed Paul Johnson, Jr. any restraint or limits?

This vote makes me SICK to my stomach!

Never a bus around when you need one.

Considering the overwhelming majority, with which it passed the Senate I am worried -- the House may go off the deep end too and pass this.

Who is that Sheriff in Texas who puts the prisoners in tents without air conditioning and makes them wear pink clothes? Now that is my idea of what to do with prisoners.

I remember seeing a TV special on that -- but we couldn't do that with the terrorists, that would be "cruel and torture" and anyone who did it, would be prosecuted under this new law, if it passes the House too.

Start petitioning the House tonight.

Aside from the House there is only one other avenue to stop this because even a VETO couldn't prevent it. And that is through...the Courts. Not exactly reassuring. This needs to be stopped in the House now.

hell, start flooding Senate offices with outrage..except for the nine that deserve praise.

Veto the bill. This is 100% BS. Detainees (PC for throat slitters) have NO effing rights.

Put the senate in Gitmo.

The bill is veto-proof. They only need 60 votes to override the veto, and this was passed with 90!!!

It's an outrage.

Exactly -- the HOUSE is our only hope.

The House better not allow this in as part of the negotiation with the Senate.

From another article:

"The House-approved version of it does not include the detainee provisions. It is unclear how much support the measure has in the GOP-run House.

Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee on defense, is supporting McCain’s legislation. Murtha could prove a powerful ally when House and Senate negotiators meet to reconcile differences in their bills."

I met several of my son's fellow Marines last weekend at a welcome home party for my son and let me tell you. Anyone of these fine young men are more valuable to our country than the entire worthless Senate put together.

No question about that
