Major ouch! ---
BTW, 20+ years ago, when the first IP's first came out, they were the size of a Cracker Jacks box and covered with lights.
The first guy to wear one was eating lunch in a restuarant and looked up to see he was surrounded by a SWAT team.
Seemed someone saw it and thought it was a bomb.

A normal teacher would say: "Put that phone on the desk right now."
Snatching nonweapons out of kids' hands is not SOP.

OMG!!!
As a diabetic myself, I can't imagine anything so horrible and personally invasive.
The Am Diabetes Assn needs to do some outreach to idiot teachers if they can't tell a pump from a phone. Although, considering so few phones are attached to people's bodies w/a freakin' cannula, you'd think it wouldn't be an issue.

No doubt this event will cause the teachers union to call for an immediate rasie in pay and reduction in class size so these kind of things don't happen

There have been three diabetics that were arrested by the police here in the last 15 years and died in jail. In each case, the IDIOTS in charge thought the person was faking and/or drunk. There has been NO punishment for these cases.
The teacher should be charged with assault.

In other news a school in Arizona is keeping a diabetic boy from keeping his testing kit with him under the No Tolerance rule. They say he can keep it in the nurse's office. But if he ever had a problem he would not be able to get it in time.

In all fairness, the sub probably didn't know that the kid was a diabetic. Believe it or not, the student's health situation is a privacy issue and most of the teachers for whom I sub don't leave information like that for me. The teacher should have left the information for the sub regardless of privacy rules as it was a need to know situation.
Having said that, let me add that I'm a sub and I think that that sub overreacted. At most, heor she should have asked the kid turn off the phone and left a note for the teacher. She or he had probably had a rotten day with a bunch of smart aleck students and figured that this was just one more going against school policy and using a cell phone in class. Unfortunately, it happens.

What? He couldn't ask a simple question of the boy; is that a cell phone? The boy could than have told the teachers what it was. If the teacher didn't believe him, he could have sent the boy to the Principal's office, NOT ripped the dang thing out of the kid's leg!
