Like I asked on the other thread, are they bus drivers?

The layoffs include non-escentual workers which would mean bus drivers!

No phantom employess will be laid off. The mayor has the best interest of his best interest to look out for.

it seems like they could be "temporarily reassigned" to cleanup efforts . . . . perhaps they couldn't be retained in the long run, and I know NO is a ghost town right now, but it seems like they could be put to an extremely useful purpose.

You beat me to it. He has to fire those no-show, no-work employees before he is audited. With a little digging, I think enough dirt will be uncovered to raise NOLA close to sea level again.

Certainly there's nothing for them to do.... :) Like the city couldn't sell some revenue bonds or something with the backing of the US government to raise money for salaries during this time?

This guy is brainless....

Nagin is trying to cover for the paychecks of 700 phantom cops. I wonder if anyone will be held accountable?

"Mayor Ray Nagin says the city has to lay off as many as 3,000 workers."

This is not unexpected news.

New Orleans was having a hard time paying it's city employee's BEFORE the hurricane ever arrived.

Mayor Ray Nagin and his 'posse' are just using this as an excuse to trim the fat.

Does this leave any employees on the city's payroll?

This actually a problem for several parishes and communities where there is no revenue coming in.

YIKES! Almost 3 times as many city workers as cops!!

I wonder if these city workers are the same city employees Senator Landrieu was talking about when she said you can't get em to show up for work on sunny days, much less in a hurricane.

I am not sure if it is the same everywhere, but here, police etc. are paid by revenue from property taxes, which are distributed to the cities, etc. semi annually, so that N. O. would have received the 2nd half of their money prior to the hurricane, which should carry them over for the rest of the year. Generally that money is earmarked and cannot be used for other things. This stinks to me.

According to them, they don't come in to work on normal days so why expect them in an emergency...

I hope most were bus drivers.
