Mayor Ray Nagin says the city has to lay off as many as 3,000 workers.

Unexplainedly, Mayor Nagin explained that this would not affect actual staffing levels, since many of these employees are dead or imaginary.

He should have laid himself off first. Lead by example. And take Landrieu, Blank-O, Vitter, and all the rest of the elected polls.

I sure hope that old Bazooka Ray writes down their names and addresses before giving them the boot.

Now, this could really be a prize-winning story if some young computer jockey matched the names with street address in the Crescent City....

Mayor Ray Nagin announced Tuesday the city has to lay off as many as 3,000 workers.

Nagin says he's worked for weeks to try to find the financing that would allow him to keep the city workers on the payroll. But he says in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, that isn't possible.

He says it's with "great sadness" that he announces that the city can't hold onto its dedicated workers. He thanked those who've served New Orleans.
