Mayor Ray Nagin announced Tuesday the city has to lay off as many as 3,000 workers.


Nagin says he's worked for weeks to try to find the financing that would allow him to keep the city workers on the payroll. But he says in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, that isn't possible.


He says it's with "great sadness" that he announces that the city can't hold onto its dedicated workers. He thanked those who've served New Orleans.
