COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Oct. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family Action Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D., issued the following statement today regarding President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the United States Supreme Court:
"We welcome the president's nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court. He pledged emphatically during his campaign to appoint judges who will interpret the law rather than create it. He also promised to select competent judges who will 'not use the bench to write social policy.'(1) To this point, President Bush's appointments to the federal bench appear to have been remarkably consistent with that stated philosophy. Based on the information known generally about Harriet Miers, and President Bush's personal knowledge of her, we believe that she will not prove to be a lone exception.
"On the other hand, one cannot know absolutely about matters of integrity and philosophy until a jurist is given the tremendous power and influence of their position. As Lord Acton said: 'Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.' Sadly, that seems to have happened to Justices Souter and Kennedy. All we can say now is that Harriet Miers appears to be an outstanding nominee for the Supreme Court.
"We look forward to learning more about her at the confirmation hearings."

Here come the hornets....look out...
Well, there you have it. The liberals like her, and the conservatives like her. So who's right?
Sometimes I don't know if Dobson is going with his political preferences or his moral beliefs.
Mort Kondracke also supports Bush's choice. Here is his logic: He has a strong record of nominating conservatives to the courts and fighting for them, even renominating them. That's pretty much my interpretation of what Dobson said, too.
Exactly. And he admits it too.
Dobson is simply acting how he generally does regarding "Republican issues"..
With Dobson the two are synonomous.
James Dobson is an honorable man!!
James Dobson would support Hillary Clinton if she were anti-abortion.
I think Fred Barnes said that, but those two are easy to mix up.
What do you make of this:

Money quote:
"Supports the enactment of laws and public policy which provide that sexual orientation shall not be a bar to adoption when the adoption is determined to be in the best interest of the child. ...
Recommends the development and establishment of an International Criminal Court."
That's nice. Too bad Mr.Dobson doesn't have a shred of evidence to back up his beliefs about Ms. Miers.
It's funny watching the "true conservatives" diss Dobson and Seukelow.
Now there's a resounding endorsement!
My mistake-- it was Fred Barnes. Thanks.
As are many Freepers. For them, there is no other issue but abortion. A judge could be a raving leftist, if they only voted to overturn Roe.
< sarcasm off >
Exactly. It's not just a "feeling" either. I wrote earlier today that there are strong signs that Harriet Miers' promotes a culture of life. She takes care of her aged mother and she is a longtime, active member of Valley View Christian Church. I have worked with members of this church with various pro-life projects here in Dallas and I can't imagine a pro-choicer feeling comfortable there. It's a good church.
I think that Bush has made a good choice and that a year from now social and economic conservatives will be very satisfied with Miers' service on the Supreme Court.
