National Review Online ^ | October 3, 2005 | Wynton C. Hall

One thing is clear: The president has now officially stepped on a strategic landmine heading in the 2006 midterm congressional elections. What might have otherwise been a masterstroke moment to ignite and galvanize the conservative base — the people who show up to vote during midterm elections — has morphed into a...

This is SO true! Imagine the GOP fundraising had we made this a battle royale. Truly a missed opportunity.

The GOP's fund raising was already going to garnish ZERO dollars from my house.

I need say nothing more than I disagree, and that it is premature for anybody to make this type of statement.

I suspect if it turns out she can read and has actually read the Constitution, it may enhance GOP chances in 2006.

the gop raises funds and uses it to help out rinos who run against conservatives in primaries...that is why they get no money from me.

Explain to me how nominating a Evangelical Christian pro-life woman will make the base not show up?

The GOP doesnt need our money they recieve most of their funding from business and special interest groups. This is why Bush and Rove could care less about what we think and will appoint a liberal to SCOTUS and keep the border wide open for terrorists. Weve already been sold my friends the GOP is not our friends anymore than the democrats. We need to pick individual candidates who are true conservatives and arent afraid to show it.

I have not supported the national or state parties for the past several years. I do support individual candidates I deem worthy. Don't get me wrong, GW is still better then that worth fop dandy from MASS, but I am very disappointed in his presidency now.

There is no evidence to support that she is pro-life. The point is that Bush had an opportunity to remake the SCOTUS and blew it. He promised to pick judges in the mold of Scalia and Thomas. Are your sure that he has done so?

Same here, I am a conservative, not a republican. The two are not always the same.

From Bush's previous statements, he wants a strict constitutionalist on the bench. That takes precedence over being really smart, having a great ABA rating, etc. Secondly, he wants someone who will be confirmed. I believe that he believes that in Miers he found both.

It could be he interviewed all the nominees and found Miers to be the most outstanding candidate based on his confidence in her ability to stay the course throughout the rest of her life. A secondary consideration may be that he found her better at forming coalitions than other candidates. While I believe Scalia and Thomas are brilliant, their record has not shown them to be effective at getting other justices to vote with them. Getting Miers and Roberts in there may effect a huge swing that brings a number of 6-3 decisions that previously were 4-5 decisions.

I believe Miers is a candidate that brings the life experience to vote solidly in the right way and bring others around to her and Roberts' way of thinking.

My prediction stands, and I must remind all you chicken littles that I was almost ALONE here on FR on election day telling you that the exit polls were wrong, and that we had won OH; and that I was only off by TWO senate seat predictions in TWO CYCLES (2002, 2004, and that would be Thune in 02 and Coors in 04), which is, as best I can tell, a pretty darn good record---

And my prediction is that we pick up one more Senate seat in 06 and increase the House lead by a couple.

Too many aren't even listening or reading those things about her. They moved immediately to "destroy" mode. Once people get into the hate, too many of them stay there. Hate is a huge draw. In the short run, and a year or two is the short run. But notice, some of them are in denial that they have turned on a dime into Bush haters and Harriet Miers haters, oh no, not them...they are the VICTIMS OF THE EVIL BUSH.

No problem. Just send your contributions to INDIVIDUAL conservative candidates of your choice.
