The point is that there are at least five republican senators who would vote against Luttig, Owens and probably Brown too.
When Bush has to get Cheney to sell his nominee, it doesn't look good. Not good at all.
OMG Did you just HEAR Breyer on his new book? He doesn't GET that PRINCIPLE does NOT change in time.
UNbelievable.
Rush is SUPERB on this topic.
Do you feel better criticizing without information?
Yes I think that's a GREAT way to put it. If I had to really nail it down, I would say that I am right in between "supporting her" and "not playing yet" on this one. I am encouraged by the people who have spoken out so strongly so quickly about herr and her Christian and conservative values. The fact that she's a recovering Catholic, and a proven evangelical Christian really says a lot. But because she isn't someone I've heard of before, I'm prayerfully cautious, hoping and praying that Bush's judgement on her is right, and that she's a strict constructionist and very conservative and loyal to the Constitution and what it says, not what someone like stevens and ginsberg wants it to say. That's where I am. I refuse to jump out and make emotional statments with no facts to back them up, slamming the woman and Bush based on a lack of facts and evidence that would back up that reaction. I think real conservatives who are having that reaction are making a real mistake. Conservatives need to band together, not sheer apart. We are under a concerted attack by liberals with DeLay, and Frist, and Bennett, and this will be next. We need to be taking it to the liberals, not having this infighting because of knee jerk fear without fact as the basis. If we as conservatives don't band together and fight, the conservative movement is dead. There's just no time for this chicken little crap with Miers. Opinions should be based on facts and first hand accounts of her, not fear and speculation. It's just that simple.
Perhaps, but why couldn't they appoint a replacement for one of them? And if moving outside the Courts, imo, there are still more qualified candidates. Even Jeff Sessions, as we've discussed.
Thank you for understanding.
I love this President, I have a great deal of Faith in the man. But I still think he could have done better, even for a "stealth" nominee. She may well complete his promise, but my expectations were that at least the qualifications would be unimpeachable. These are simply adequate.
I'll cope with the disappointment, but for the moment I need to express it. And the W.H. needs to hear it.
I frankly do not think the Republican Senate majority has the b***s to really dig in and fight to confirm a Pryor or Luddig known hard conservative. That's my point. Analysis that states "GWB would get his 'known' conservative pick confirmed" has not fully accounted for the spinelessness of the GOP Senators. I'll take my chances on a nominee who's 'unknown' to 99.9% of DC but 'well known' to the one person who counts - GWB.
Your other comments are spot on, as well.
ANd that money she gave was in '88, 17 years ago for Pete's sake! She hasn't donated money to any democrat in 15 years!!! What's your explaination for that? Reagan was a Democrat and gave money to democrats too years ago, did you oppose him for President both times??? The fact that she gave money, when forced to by her law firm by the way, to a couple democrats, back when she was a democrat, an old democrat not a liberal democrat, is no kind of proof that she's not a conservative today. She was also Catholic back then too, and since then has converted to become an evangelical Christian. Whatever happened to, "Forget what you did before, what have you done for me lately?" Because lately, she's been a pro-life, very conservative, Evangelical Christian, with strong conservative constructionist beliefs. THAT is Miers today. You're opposing the 1988 Miers, and that woman doesn't exist today. You're opposing a ghost, not the reality that has just been nominated for the court. The person you're opposed to doesn't exist anymore. Look at the facts, and read the comments of the proven conservatives who are out supporting Miers. Stop basing your opinion on 15 year old points and supposition!
I remember a photo-op with Roberts, but I can't remember if he took questions from the press or gave a speech...
BTW, I just heard the bottom of the hour news from ABC News on the radio....and they went on and on about how "everyone" wanted Bush to nominate a woman, and even had a sound clip of George Stephy saying that even Laura Bush wanted a woman...
THEN, the reporter said that when Leahy was contacted he (Leahy) said that he thought Bush should have picked an Hispanic!!!!!
LOL---IT IS ALWAYS SOMETHING...Roseanna Roseannadanna!
Zell gave a speech FOR Clinton, AGAINST GHWB!!!!
Please realize that when she did that, it was YEARS ago...even earlier than Zell gave a campaign speech for Bill Clinton....and Zell changed, right????
Besides, how do you know that she is pro-abortion, anti-2nd Amendment....???
Do you agree 100% with every single thing that the people you vote for believe????
Then you ought to read the whole Watergate tapes with respect to the Rhenquist nomination. Nixon was absolutely hilarious. The "distinguished" quote was exact. But there's a whole section (and I don't recall his exact words) where Nixon goes on about how distinguished really means "more Harvard lawyers" and niether he nor A.G. Mitchell went to Harvard and they both turned out ok. He adds that Harvard lawyers are a pain in the arse and don't want to work hard.
Great stuff, especially if you are a fan of Nixon.
Oh this is rich. Now a caller is saying Rush gave this decision a pass. LOL
OK...can we look at her history?
Try THIS site to see some of her legal ideas...
I'll quote some, thanks to stellar...
" in 1990 Miers voted for a 7 percent property tax increase during her short tenure on the Dallas City Council"
"For instance, she apparently submitted the following report to the ABA's House of Delegates. Here are two of the report's recommendations:
Supports the enactment of laws and public policy which provide that sexual orientation shall not be a bar to adoption when the adoption is determined to be in the best interest of the child. ...
Recommends the development and establishment of an International Criminal Court."
Now...does THAT sound "Conservative"? Or is this in line with a Dukakoid/DemonRAT agenda?
Is this a Scalia/Thomas type Justice candidate? Or more like a Ruth Badder-Meinhoff Ginsburg/Souter/Stevens/Breyer type?
I agree with everything you just said...
Well put!!!
Thanks, sounds like something well worth pursuing. I had read Johnathan Aitkin's book, Nixon, A Man......and just loved it.
"The fact that she gave money to gore and bensten in the early 90s has already been shown to mean little. Her law firm required that, and she hasn't donated to any democrats in well over 12 years."
And how long will it be before giving money to pro-aborionist Kay Bailey Hutchinson means little or nothing?
He said all the media is calling him because they think he criticized the President.
One of the first things I saw on TV this morning, was Sen. Cornyn having a presser about her...and for some reason, I got the impression that he wasn't as gung-ho about her as I would have liked....
He was demonstrably happy about Roberts, but I seemed to sense a difference today...but, when asked if he knew she was a possibility...he said not for sure, but that he understood why President Bush picked her.
This may be a roller coaster...so we better strap ourselves in, friend!!!
He should have nominated JRB.
This was a tactical mistake. The base needs a cause to rally around and take the heat off any number of other issues like Rove, Katrina, Delay, etc. We needed this one.
Even if JRB had lost, he would still have been able to make political points.
He gets nothing out of this nomination. Her views remain to be seen, but Miers does not pass the competency test and leaves him open to further charges of cronyisn which were already surfacing with the Michael Brown fiasco.
I think this needs to be added to the post.
