Until I hear something that indicates she has liberal tendencies, I can't oppose her with a clear conscience.

Is that the only two alternatives? Support her or oppose her? Can't we say, we won't play in this one?

"Do you want the Senate Republicans to be the army?" (Suggesting Bush lacks confidence in them.)

What room does this analysis leave for leadership from the president?

Whether she turns out to be good bad or indifferent is beside the point. Supreme Court nominees are a core issue for conservatives. Blaming Senate Republicans is a limp and discouraging suggestion. Some things are worth herding unwilling politicians onto stage for the purpose of some instructive political theater. Once again, we are full retreat in the Culture Wars while our leaders wink and backslap and tell us the unwashed conservative masses to pipe down and leave it to the professionals.

Rush: Dingy Harry has come out twice in support of her today.

That's not a good sign.

When I read what Extreme Right are saying, it makes it clear, I was never in your circle of nobles. All along, family and friends have called me extreme right. I now no, that is not me when remarks on here today have been so full of disguist for a women they know nothing about.

Let me post something for you to consider...

4 . MIERS, HARRIET E MS 11/3/1988 $1,000.00 DALLAS, TX 75229 [Contribution] DNC SERVICES CORPORATION/DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE

Hmm..note the date...days before the Bush 41/Dukakis election!

Yeah, this lady is a REAL Conservative...she was donating RIGHT BEFORE ELECTION DAY to the DNC!!!

Given Dukakis' positions (Pro-abortion, anti-second ammendment)...does ANYONE think that she was donating to someone she was philosophically OPPOSED to?!

And when the Political winds changed in Texas...she weathervaned right along with them (Good sound principles there...how does GWB justify her work AGAINST his father and the (R)'s?) and in all likelyhood kept her previous "Principles" in tact, because the (R)'s decided to go with a "Big Tent" strategy...which just allowed the enemy to work from within to destroy the Base!

But I'm sure that the BushBot Kool-Aid crowd will be along soon to pooh-pooh this info, and pass out warm glasses of Pi$$ and tell us it's Republican Strategerey Lemonaide!

Rush - "If you want to go to war, do you want the Senate Republicans to be your army?"

Not with the Gang of 14 floating around....

Rush now discussing "what if it turns out this woman is a Christian? Or even an evangelical Christian? What will the left say then?"

I think initial indications are just that. I googled the church she is reported to attend and it is an evangelical Christian church. (Slow in loading as well, don't think the church's server is used to the kind of traffic it is likely getting today!)

BTW, Valley View Christian in Dallas, TX.

I posted this on another thread but when Rhenquist was being criticized for "not being distinguished enough", Nixon replied, "Put a f-ing robe on him, then he'll be distinguished."

I too am dismayed at the reaction to this pick. I simply don't know enough about Meirs either way to rip Bush for this selection. But I do like the idea of a lawyer's lawyer type on the Court, rather than an academic or another appellate judge. Look where that got us. (Breyer, Kennedy, Souter, O'Connor, Stevens).

I am always amazed when legal issues are debated on FR. Despite excellent commentary and insight on a wide range of topics, any time any aspect of the legal system is discussed here, uninformed hysteria seems to abound.

Typical day on Free Republic. A good percentage of this forum will trash anyone who doesn't hold their narrow minded view of what a "conservative" should be. They are the same ones who always claim they support the President but most never have and either do not vote or vote third party.

It's an implied critisism that those upset are only the usual discontents. It has ben spoken not only by you, but others. And I have had my fill of it.

Do I take it personally? Absolutely.

The reality is that this nomination was greeted quite differently than the Roberts nomination, when instaneous cheers arose. Look up the Live Thread that day. The reality is that a far wider segment of the base that IS very supportive of this President was not happy with this selection. they are not of the mindset to trash the man, but they are expressing their disappointment and they have the right to do so without being linked to the ones you refer to.

At least Rush can come right out and call them "a bunch of linguine spined republicans".

I wonder about Pres. Bush's spine sometimes.

I would have just rather had Luttig or Brown instead of "hoping" that we got a Luttig-Brown type.

The NE Rinos were out in full force saying they would not support a proven pro-life conservative.

I doubt Luttig or Brown would have been confirmed by the full Senate. If the Democrats held together and the Rinos voted in block a proven conservative stood no chance.

The fight would have been fun but because of the RINOs they would have failed.

I trust 43 more than I do our House of Lords. I think his decision may say more about what's wrong with the Senate than with the president.

Why? Were you on the short list for the nomination? ;)

Were you one of the ones that cheered Zell Miller's speech at the Reprublican National Convention???

Zell Miller has voted and spoken pretty conservatively...and even campaigned for Pres. Bush...but he STILL plans on staying a Democrat...

Supposedly, Dingy Harry is PRO-LIFE, but that doesn't keep him from insulting and filibustering pro-life nominees...

Sometimes a "name" is just a name....and not the whole story about someone...

Rush is a highly skilled broadcast professional. He is doing the "rope-a-dope" on all you bots. Show a bit of anger in the beginning, next begins to waffle as he draws in the bots, next he has you hooked, and then you will fully support the WH. That's his job and he is good at it...

Bingo! A+ for you. The VP wouldn't go on if Rush wasn't in the WH pocket. He will ask some "tough" questions in order to try to remain some conservative (as opposed to strictly Republican) credentials.
