Your point is correct. Rehnquist had no judicial experience when Nixon plucked him from the Justice Dept. And certainly Rehnquist turned out just fine.
My own sense of this is that conservatives were really spoiling for a fight, wanted to rub the RATS' nose in the dogdirt, and ultimately go nuclear. However, Bush wants results -- getting a strict constructionist confirmed without having to use a lot of political capital.
I am feeling much better about this nominee, just wish she were younger.

I spent the weekend reassuring my wife and two local activists that the president would do the right thing, what with the wealth of solid talent we had out there.
Today all the enthusiasm has been sucked right from every republican I have spoken to today. At the best I am getting excuses or apologies for the pick.

There are many brilliant legal minds who matriculated at non-Ivy League institutions, and there is something to be said for choosing a person who hasn't spent over four years being indoctrinated by the faculty of Harvard Law School.
However, I defy anyone to claim that there aren't dozens-if not hundreds-of men and women who have comparable educational backgrounds and who are just as qualified-if not more so-to serve in this capacity.

This is my problem with the choice...now correct me if i'm wrong here....
We control both houses of congress and the executive branch....why are we picking essentially an unknown canidate. WE HAVE AN ENTIRE FARM SYSTEM OF CONSERVATIVE JUDGES SET UP BY PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS IN THE LOWER COURTS....WHY NOT PICK ONE OF THEM..AHEM(Brown, Luttwig, Owens..to name a few)

Fight anyway. Fight hard, never surrender. Oppose the northeasterners in the next primary, get a real Senate majority leader and never let them have any pork, do whatever it takes.
There has not been an opportunity like this in American domestic politics (ie, to switch a moderate vote to a conservative one on SCOTUS) for some 15 years.
If we don't fight now, what with 55 senators, then we never will.

I voted for him twice for Governor of Texas and twice for President so don't try to pull any lack of support crap on me. I simply don't want him to pick a Judge for poliical reasons because when the day is done he will be safe and rich and the rest of us will be screwed.
He has a majority in both Houses but all he can do is pander and kiss ass on this issue. My dog has more balls and she is a girl!
