Roberts is confirmed but still an unknown quantity. Don't count those eggs yet.

Yes, we've been saying that Exodus Ministries in Dallas is the right organization for hours on this thread!

Rhenquist was a brilliant academic and had experience arguing constitutional issues. Does Miers? Is she experienced in any area of substantive law that is going to be a major issue before the Court? Weren't there numerous other proven conservative nominees that had these qualifications?

I recall the attacks against Clarence Thomas. He didn't have sufficient judicial experience and had briefly headed some WH agency. He wasn't the best-qualified for the job, they all said.

He's turned out to be the best judge on the court - not because of his sophistication, but because of his simplicity. He's a radical to the left because he goes to the dictionary for the meaning of words in the Constitution - what a simpleton and a rube. More sophisticated judges go looking for penubras and new meanings and find rights that were there all along and no one ever noticed them.

Someone posted an interview with Miers' pastor. He said she would take an originalist viewpoint - namely, that words have specific meaning. If that holds out to be true (and that's a big honkin' IF), I will gladly support Miers. We don't need more sophistication on the court. We need less.

I know one thing for sure, she as an unmarried woman will have great difficulty standing up for heterosexual marriage, life and other things.

That is outright bullsh*t. Just because someone has never been married does not mean they are anti-marriage or pro-homosexual marriage. I have an aunt who is 70 years old, never married, and staunchly supports marriage only between men and women. Just remember, the apostle Paul was never married and actually said that marriage is not necessary for everyone.

I really, really hope this nomination fails.

You hope everything the President does will fail.

I think my own mom used to mostly just let me wear myself out when I had a tantrum, but I don't know what the current parenting trend is.

If you're at home, let 'em scream it out. If you're in the restroom at Olive Garden, strap them back into the car seat and let them scream it out.

FWIW, I have now officially done that with both boys...

you should try strapping a 16-year-old in a car seat...

..He should have.. put up a JR Brown, and told 'em to "Bring it on".

Yeah, that would have been my choice. But maybe this is the way it has to be, based on the realities of the Senate. Rush is talking about this right now.

What? Don't you enjoy being around people who know nothing and are proud to admit it?

I am disappointed with the comments. How can anyone know what she will be like??

That gives me some hope. Much needed hope as I'm watching Harry Reid gush over her...

Sure, if that other person is more qualified and has a record of past judgements. What the heck do we know about this woman other than that she's politically confused, has absolutely NO experience whatsoever and is Bush's lackey.

Are you telling me that there's no other, more qualified, better person out there???

Dingy Harry's a dumbarse if there ever was one. He'll weasel his way into opposing Miers over the next few weeks...

If I don't know anything about a candidate, I won't vote.

Did I say I was giving the President a pass? No, I said we don't know enough about her yet to all pile on both of them like I see happening here today.

I didn't think Roberts is best qualified either. I also don't think Bush was best qualified for President.

I really don't think your analogy works here.

Harriet Miers -- pro, part 2

***** Miers has been a member of Valley View Christian Church in Dallas for 25 years, where Hecht has been an elder. He calls it a "conservative evangelical church... in the vernacular, fundamentalist, but the media have used that word to tar us." He says she was on the missions committee for ten years, taught children in Sunday School, made coffee, brought donuts: "Nothing she's asked to do in church is beneath her." On abortion, choosing his words carefully for an on-the-record statement, he says "her personal views are consistent with that of evangelical Christians... You can tell a lot about her from her decade of service in a conservative church."

Harriet Miers -- pro, part 3

***** Hecht says about Miers' judicial philosophy: "She's an orginalist -- that's the way she takes the Bible," and that's her approach to the Constitution as well -- "Originalist -- it means what it says." He notes that her legal practice involved writing contracts rather than tort law, so she was always looking at the plain meaning of the words: "Originalist." He also says she's not a social butterfly who will be swayed by Washington dinner table conversation: "She goes to the dinners she's supposed to go to. She's not on the social circuit."

Harriet Miers -- pro, part 4

Hecht says Miers never got married because she "probably worked too hard. She's close to her family, has a sister and three brothers, goes to her nephews' high school football games, bought a car for one of them." She "had a Catholic upbringing, had not been close to the church, it was off again, on again, then she came to a point in her life when she wanted to change that…. She made an abrupt change in 79 or 80. She was very hard-working and successful, she wanted new meaning, substance in her life.” Her father died when she was a freshman in college. "Look at her commitment in taking care of her [now 93-year-old mother] all these years. Look at her tax returns. She tithes, gave a full tithe to the church. Helps out in missions, Bible translation. These are the kinds of values she shows." Hecht and Miers "went to two or three prolife dinners in the late 80s or early 90s."

I think Brown could be confirmed, hell Thomas was in a Dem. Senate, and it would do the country good to see the left rip into a black, self-made woman. The black vote is already trending right, that would only speed up the process.

Yeah, I do recall that argument being used against Clarence Thomas as well.

"And . . . if she does support abortion, it does say something unpleasant about how she interprets the Constitution."

- Bush has worked with her and beside her for more than five years. In that time they must have had many conversations, both socially informal and work related, during which he has been able to see, time and again, her judicial temperament when it comes to the hot button issues. I think Bush's Christian beliefs are deeply held and he would not betray them just to avoid a Senate fight. I think he believes he knows what makes her tick and sees in her someone with core values like his own.
Don't go wobbly on old George until she has had a chance to write her first opinion.

Levin is a conservative. My opinion is that Miers is a fine administrator. Not a SC judge. I still stick to my conviction that she is not the right pick, when there are at least 3 others that are much more qualified. It is fine that she is pro-life, evangelical, and all that. She is NOT SC justice material, because she is unqualified; and otherwise socially liberal.

Harry Reid and Harriet just stood before the camers. Reid said something like her stuff looks "very good to me."

Harry Reid's opinion is important?

I think the fact that Delay is away is curious. Delay probably has an adversarial relationship with Harriet Miers. Maybe that's why he the DA in Texas had to get him out of the picture. Maybe Earle indicated Delay so the Miers nomination could go forward without any objections from real conservatives.
