Harriet Miers
OK, I'll bite. I do not think a concern about whether the president picked Miers because of her personal loyalty to him is a leftist line. I think it reflects a concern that the Bush family has, back through the years, way before G.W., placed a higher premium on personal loyalty than it ought to have. Not that personal loyalty isn't important and useful. However, my loyalty to our cause, a cause I've been fighting for literally since elementary school, far exceeds my personal loyalty to any one president, including President Bush. Because presidents are transitory. The cause isn't.
The Exodus Ministries I am referencing is based in Dallas - it fits the name exactly as President Bush said it and it's in Miers' home area. I think it's the one. A Christian ministry helping released prisoners get back into society.
BUSH...gives in on our big chance to overturn liberal gobbly gook and RoeWade
Bush never vetoes a spending bill
Bush lets illegal immigrants cross at will
BushBots unite...I've always had reservations...on Campaign Finance and Illegal Immigration...but this was the final straw....
You watch his favorability ratings and the Iraq polls plummet now, he will lose 15 percent in the polls as his base is now gone...but he'll barely stay at about 37% with the wily nily Limo CClub Republican who think Bush has a master plan tht is an enigma inside a labyrinth of strategery.
Legacy gone.
Here are their express objectives in their own words ...
The Exodus program has the following 3 primary objectives:1) to decrease the number of ex-offenders who become homeless and unemployed, eventually committing new crimes and returning to prison.
2) to assist ex-offenders in obtaining employment and managing their finances so they can re-establish a positive self-sufficient lifestyle.
3) to reunite ex-offenders with their families and teach them the life-skills necessary for daily living through counseling and training services.
Damn, you're sliming someone without knowing their record. Some Christian...

I havent read all the posts, Im taking a break from homework, so i dont know if this has been addressed or not: Suppose W knows he is going to get another nomination (Ginsburg? Stevens?) and is just "throwing a bone" to the left here?
LOL. What is the definition of brilliant?
Some of the Freepers squawking about the pick would not support anyone without a track record they like. That track record would also mean the person could not be confirmed.
Personally, I would rather have a nominee that President Bush knows and trusts, and might have a chance to be confirmed, than someone everyone knows has no chance whatsoever of being confirmed.
Some of the opposition on this board, of course, is from liberals in disguise. FR is high profile enough that some of our posters are really from the other side, here to sow doubt and confusion. The easily spotted trolls get zotted, but the clever ones can spread their poison for quite a while.
Wow! You fancy yourself, don't you?
You don't know Meiers, yet you're willing to make judgements about her.
That's not insight. It's prejudice.
The President said in his announcement this morning that she was a leader of this ministry.

POLITICS OF A MIERS PICK
Would become the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court; she is now one of a few prominent women at the White House after the promotions of Condoleezza Rice and Margaret Spellings
Has never served as a judge, and has no record on issues
Her office is responsible for vetting judicial nominees for the White House
Has known Bush since the 1980's; she worked as counsel on his 1994 gubernatorial bid and is often invited to Camp David
MISCELLANEOUS
Bush has called Mier a "pit bull in size 6 shoes" and said, "When it comes to cross-examination, she can fillet better than Mrs. Paul"
Miers's appointment to general counsel was a "minor surprise", the Washington Post wrote last year, as another promising lawyer was under consideration
Miers met with and interviewed John Roberts several times before Bush announced him as his choice
According to Business Week, Miers was the first person at the White House to know of O'Connor's resignation and was tasked by Bush to inform Edith Brown Clement she had been passed over for Roberts
Is characterized as a workaholic who arrives at work sometimes as early as 4:30 am and doesn't leave until after 10 pm
Said to be "shy" and a "loner"; to her fault, some say she is too detail-oriented. One White House staffer told Texas Lawyer last year, "She can't separate the forest from the trees."
Was against eliminating the ABA rankings from consideration in vetting judicial candidates

I am on the conservative side. This pick is not conservative, by any measure of actions. Words out of the chief executives mouth do NOT make this sorry, leftist, liberal conservative. And the Rah-Rah crowd continues to think there is some strategy to selecting a SC justice based SOLELY on gender. Fill the quota, and screw the conservative base.
It's the Patrician element of legacy and "get along" that is embedded in his DNA and something he ca't shake even with that ol folksy Texas accent.
too many disappointments lately.
Please, then, tell us how this is not a conservative pick, given what we know at this point.
Do you research, she isn't how some are portraying her here, and the Dem reaction is likely going to quickly change.
After reading more about her and her church (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1495754/posts) I think it is very likely that she is a quiet pro-life evangelical conservative. There are many, many good churches here in Dallas, so many large ones that you can find any that fits your beliefs and don't have to waste time in those where your beliefs would be marginalized. Valley View Christian Church is a conservative evangelical church. Years ago there was a big split in the Christian Church, with the majority going to the more socially liberal Disciples of Christ wing, while Valley View went with the socially conservative side, somewhat comparable to the Presbyterian Church in America (as opposed to the liberal PC-USA), Churches of Christ, and conservative Southern Baptist congregations.
Of course church membership doesn't offer a guaranteed understanding of an individual's view on all issues, but given all the options in Dallas, it may be quite telling.
I have faith in Roberts...but this Miers, she is a darkhorse well at least to me because I thought Bush would choose JRB. JRB and Roberts would have been quite the duo.
See post #1850 for more evidence of her Christianity.
Harriet Miers is beloved by the ABA. They are superior beings to non-lawyers.
Roger That ~ that should be the only question!
