Fox News reporting a tour boat named the "Ethan Allen" has overturned in a lake in northern New York state. 46-50 persons were on board and rescues are on going. Searching for an AP link...

Hi This is so sad. Just hearing about it now. Was'nt there talk this summer about the lake being way too crowded and a ban on wave runners too close to shore?
It was a pleasure cruise. Life jackets are there but people don't wear them on the ride. Like the Maid of the Mist under Niagara Falls.
Surprised the press is not calling it "Lake George Bush". Afterall, it's all Bush's fault.

It isn't that tough as long as you don't panic, which is what kills virtually everyone in the water. Anyone can drownproof fully clothed for days if they need to. Bob up and down in the water, relax to go down, one stroke to come up for air, and you will die of thirst before you get tired.
I think what happened was people got caught under the boat and paniced. The thing is, as soon as you see the boat going down, you must get into the water.
If any were handicapped it would make it harder though.
Nagin would have had them all tucked in safely in their life vests, even on a lazy warm fall day.

Can you say Landlocked Salmon? I never caught one but LG is one of the few lakes that has them.
Perhaps you would like to address the issues I raised rather than launching into ad hominems?
1) The boat that is pictured is poorly designed and constructed - the deck is even with the top of the gunwhale and with the addition of glass panels, it becomes more top heavy.
2) The boat pictured is too small for that many passengers.
I imagine that these tours were not free and I imagine that 50 people paid more than 49. There are greedy people everwhere.
3) You keep repeating in your posts that this was a freak accident. There is no such thing as freak accidents on the water - just stupidity in anticipating what can happen on the water.
4) Nothing personal - you are right about passengers never wearing life preservers but very wrong about boating accidents. This accident happened close to shore in calm conditions and there is nothing freakish about the reported wakes which at worst are far better than winds that occur every week.

And as for your life jacket remark, life jackets are not required to be worn,
nor are they regularly worn on boats of this size.

Crossing the Astoria Bar is a whole nother matter from a lake cruise. Name one instance where life jackets are typically worn on a tour boat. I can see people clamouring about it, but right now it just isn't done.
Well, crossing a bar and riding on a charter ought to be 2 different things, one would hope. I think the one type of pleasure craft where you see a lot of life jackets worn is canoes, especially in the back country.
