And as for your life jacket remark, life jackets are not required to be worn,
nor are they regularly worn on boats of this size.

Your take?

EVERY Coast Guard personnel
be it Regular, Reserve, Auxiliary
or Civilian Employees are required to
wear a PFD when on a Coast Guard
or Coast Guard Auxiliary
vessel underway.

I hear the bar broadcasts up here in Oregon.

Last week a skipper of a charter boat lost his life when his vessel sunk.

He tried crossing the bar at Winchester Bay,
despite Coast Guard radio warnings not to.

He wasn't wearing a PFD eihter.

Crossing the Astoria Bar is a whole nother matter from a lake cruise. Name one instance where life jackets are typically worn on a tour boat. I can see people clamouring about it, but right now it just isn't done.

Well, crossing a bar and riding on a charter ought to be 2 different things, one would hope. I think the one type of pleasure craft where you see a lot of life jackets worn is canoes, especially in the back country.

I know what you're saying, Tonk... but crossing the NW river bars is one thing. Cruise and ferry passenger practicality is another.

And speaking of NW river bars... unless it's a gumby suit, a PFD merely makes recovery of the body easier.
